Re: Freshers 2011 Nerds!Hi(Original post by Mouse Potato)
I thought I'd peep in here and say hello. I'm a gamer on quite a few different platforms, super book-ish and a Tolkein fanatic. More into fantasy than sci-fi but I'll never turn down an episode of Stargate either. I used to do a little bit of tinkering with computers too, but not all that much lately. I've been in and out of the Warhammer scene for about 8 or 9 years so wouldn't mind getting back into that at some stage if anyone else needs a gaming partner. I've done a fair bit of TCG but mostly WoW not Magic:The Gathering. If anyone here is a WoW TCG player please please let me know! Used to be part of a raid group back in 2010 but then various job and education changes meant that we had to put it on indefinite hold, and I'd really like to get back into it! Also, to whoever it was that mentioned writing, I'm doing the creative writing course. Anyway, nice to meet you all!

What kind of Fantasy books do you like then ? -
Re: Freshers 2011 Nerds!More or less anything, but mostly Tolkein, anything Norse related, and plenty of badly written stuff involving dragons. To be honest I've not have much time to read anything fantasy of late since I'm trying to get through this massive great pile of stuff for the new term (and failing... P: ) but I'm hoping that once I've moved in and settled I'll have more time for fantasy again. Was recommended Trudy Canavan by a friend so I guess that's where I'll start. :3

Hey!! Here I am
About to start languages and linguistics at UCL, fond of Harry Potter, otherwise into role-play, obscure languages, linguistics and allied sciences, writing (a beginning author...), drama, music, travelling and education (published a research paper recently...
).

Badly written stuff about dragons...........Eragon?
-
Re: Freshers 2011 Nerds!Haha, amongst other things, unfortunately so, yes! Eragon himself is so petty and irritating though! I used to write a lot of pre-cycle fanfiction (still have two big ones that were put on indefinite hold for various reasons... maybe I'll have time to pick them up again at Warwick, who knows...) so I died inside a little bit when he mentioned the possibility of writing that next! Hoping there will be some Tornac / Morzan / earlier forsworn stuff in the next one. Couldn't get through Brisingr though, got to the daft wrist cutting ritual about 5 times and then put it down. Should probably actually read it at some point, especially with the new one coming out and all. ;-;(Original post by 24craigour)
Trudi Canavan is a good place to start

Re: Freshers 2011 Nerds!
I'm seeing some good taste in books here! Brandon Sanderson, Pattrick Rothfuss, Trudi Canavan, Robin Hobb? You've pretty much listed most of my favourite authors
I also like Robert Jordan, George R.R. Martin and Terry Pratchett, though Martin and Jordan's books can be a bit of a nightmare to read at times.
I'll be studying physics, i'll be in old rootes, I like PC gaming, and watching/reading sci-fi and fantasy. (Firefly, anyone?) -

Re: Freshers 2011 Nerds!Man I couldn't get into Jordan, I read the first Wheel of Time and gave up, though I've got friends who keep bugging me to try the next ones ahah! I really want to get into Game of Thrones, especially because that TV series looks really good and a lot of people regard him as a great author... Do you (or anyone here, for that matter) like James Barclay or Joe Abercrombie?(Original post by Rinneas)

I'm in Old Rootes too! I'm doing History though. I've seen Serenity, I didn't realise it was a sort of sequel to Firefly, but since I found that out I've been itching to watch Firefly, ahah! Also, what kind of gaming do you do? -
Re: Freshers 2011 Nerds!
To be brutally honest: Robert Jordan's books can be a bit dull. I read them once as a kid, and like you, I gave up on the first book. It's only recently i've actually got to book six, and it's getting worse and worse as i'm reading them. I'm looking forward to reading the latest ones by Brandon Sanderson though
And yes: the Game of Thrones tv series is brilliant
It's actually some of the best fantasy i've seen put to tv really. Mind, the books are really good as well, so definately read them if you get a chance!
And yeah, I really liked Joe Abercrombie
I can't say i've heard of James Barclay, what did he write?
As for the gaming, it varies :P Look up my steam account, it's Doomermind at the moment. Mostly though: strategy and rpg's I suppose. Not to mention minecraft.Last edited by Rinneas; 24-09-2011 at 18:38. -
Re: Freshers 2011 Nerds!Browncoat high-five! And another for being a Pratchett fan - can't wait to get my hands on Snuff(Original post by Rinneas)
Firefly, anyone?
-
Re: Freshers 2011 Nerds!I'd actually forgotten about Snuff, so thanks for that! Apparently it's being released on the 13th of October, so not long to go at all. I always look forward to the Watch books though(Original post by blitzente)

Phenomenological: You mentioned earlier that you like sci-fi, what books of that genre do you recommend? So far i've mainly read books by Peter Hamilton and Iain Banks, so it would be interesting to know what other authors would be worth a read. -
Re: Freshers 2011 Nerds!Yep, I think I was in Year 8 when I read the first one? I had wriggled my way through LotR by then, but I just couldn't bring myself to tackle the rest of the Jordan ones ): Maybe if I have a lot of free time and a good library I'll try them again, though I have heard that there's too many characters to keep track of, and at the rate I read (at the moment I read a bit, put it down, pick it back up in a week or so, by the time I've forgotten the finer points of what was going on) I'll never finish them!(Original post by Rinneas)

I almost picked up the new Brandon Sanderson one in Waterstones yesterday, but I've got a pile of books about five foot high that I haven't read yet, so I'm putting myself under an embargo... no more new books unless they're related to my course! It's so hard though!
I'll definitely check out Game of Thrones then!
James Barclay did the Raven series - Dawnthief, Noonshade, Nightchild, Elfsorrow, Shadowheart, Demonstorm and Ravensoul - I would give those a go, I love them (:
Awh well I'm not a PC gamer (not co-ordinated enough, haha) but we have a few games in common! P: -
Re: Freshers 2011 Nerds!I once tried to get into Warhammer 40k (do you play fantasy/both?) with imperial guard but never got into the swing of it. It's something I was thinking of trying to get into, perhaps with orks this time. There's a games workshop in Coventry...(Original post by Mouse Potato)
