Re: The best Universities?Forgot St Andrews and Durham in Band 2 or Band 3(Original post by ultimate mashup)
Band 1: Oxbridge
Band 2: KCL, Imperial, UCL, LSE, Bristol, Manchester, Nottingham
Band 3: Other Russell Group Universities and some selected 1994 Group universities (e.g Bath).
Band 4: Remainder of 1994 group
Band 5: Hull, Goldsmiths, Brunel and some selected former polytechnics (e.g. Oxford Brooks, Trent University)
Band 6: Most Post 1992's, Bradford and Salford
Band 7: Joke Universities (e.g London Met, Thames Valley, Southbank)
-
Re: The best Universities? It's not necessarily a given. Even though they specilaise in it they could still have had really bad teachers.(Original post by HSG1992)
By the way, the sky's blue. -
Re: The best Universities? Why was this neg'd so much? It sounds about right....(Original post by Chav Princess)
Tier 1: Oxford, Cambridge.
Tier 2: Imperial, LSE.
Tier 3: UCL, Durham, St Andrews, Warwick.
Tier 4: The best universities from the 1994 Group and the Russell Group (minus the ones already listed).
Tier 5: Lesser universities from the 1994 Group and the Russell Group.
Tier 6: Below average universities.
Tier 7: Poor universities.
PS: I hate when people use the term 'Oxbridge'... they're very different! I had to change it.
Edit; of course there's some very good universities that aren't Russell Group; ie York.Last edited by Sagacious; 29-08-2011 at 22:26. -

I'm guessing they'd go in band 5, though.

Re: The best Universities?
Hmm, I turned down UCL, Surrey, Loughborough and Queen Mary's in favour of attending an ex-Poly purely because I enjoyed meeting the staff/ex-graduates a lot more. If I was to get a First Class Honours in English Literature from this ex-Poly is it likely to be looked upon poorly just because of the University I got it from despite the degree being the same one offered by the Universities I mentioned?

Re: The best Universities?depends what uni it is. You must have really liked it if you turned down UCL??(Original post by MAlec)

Re: The best Universities?
It's... Kingston, hahaha, I've seen so much hate for it but the people I spoke to from the University seemed genuinely passionate, but mainly because it's close to my father who I've not seen too much lately.
So, thinking of future prospects, I obtain a First from Kingston (after turning down the Unis I listed), am I likely to be victimised just because of how Kingston is perceived? -
Re: The best Universities? It's hard to place City tbh, for business its really good beacuse it has the esteemed cass business school but I think generally I would say it would be only an upper average uni so yeah band 4-5. As for Aston, on the league tables it usually ranks along side Birmingham but I don't think it is as renowned internationally so again I would probably say upper average. As for Kent I would place that in the same league as Keele or Brunel I think.(Original post by VintageJasmine)

Re: The best Universities?
I will say this only once - each university is made of several thousand different people (in some cases tens of thousands) - each with differing skills, expertise and knowledge. They often specialise in differing subject areas. Indeed some of the greatest research is inter-disciplinary which makes the whole league table business (which is often subject based) irrelevant. Some are research intensive, whilst others are not. Some subjects appear only at a few universities (does this make them elite?), whilst others appear at nearly every university. In the public perception some universities are poor when particular departments rank really highly on these ambiguous league tables. Many statements on TSR are comments repeated from school/college staff and parents who attended uni twenty years ago - and guess what, institutions change over that time. In short it's impossible to make any sensible list - no matter what many on here will tell you. Incidentally, you will notice a significant correlation between opinion of status of uni and that attended by the poster. Unfortunately, correlation does not always equate with reality.

Re: The best Universities? You chose Kingston...over UCL...for English? (Arguably UCL's best course)(Original post by MAlec)

You musta been smoking some fine crop that day, I want in on that.
By the by, plenty of prospective undergrads get into Cambridge but not UCL for English...I'd mention the fact you turned them down on your CV!!!
EDIT: Didn't see that you said it is close to your father...Either that or I just overlooked it because I hate my own... Anyway, my bad.Last edited by A Perfect Circle; 29-08-2011 at 23:35. -
Re: The best Universities? It certainly was a fine crop but I'd like to think that it didn't impair my decision making haha. I know UCL has an amazing English department but Kingston was important for me just because of personal reasons, am I likely to "pay" for it in the future regarding jobs then?(Original post by HSG1992)

Re: The best Universities?Sorry mate but I don't honestly know. The fact that UCL has a killer English department as well as overall rep. is the extent of my knowledge in this area.(Original post by MAlec)

Maybe start a thread and get some advice from people who've completed their English degrees and see where they're at? -
Re: The best Universities?Just some people butthurt that they aren't in the upper bands I mentioned.(Original post by Sagacious)
Why was this neg'd so much? It sounds about right.... -
Re: The best Universities? For medicine?! All that shows is how little you actually know about med schools.(Original post by alexandrafierce)
assuming you mean in the UK, then in my opinion the best universities are
1)Cambridge
2)Oxford
3)Imperial
4)UCL
5)University of Edinburgh
6)King's college london
7)University of Manchester
8)Barts and the London (Queen mary)
although the only thing i search for is medicine. so this would be my top universities for medicine
For a start even ranking med schools in the first place is retarded, clearly all you've done is picked out the top institutions from the general rankings, and extrapolated that to the medicine course, when in reality it's VERY different. -
Re: The best Universities?Kent is the best research institution out of the three listed, with certain departments measuring amongst the most renowned universities (I.e: History, Economics and Law). It is also home to numerous top 10/20 academic courses (including History, Economics, Law and English - as well as quasi subjects, the likes of Psychology, Forensic Science, Architecture, Accountancy and Finance). The entry requirements for almost any academic course are AAB/ 34IB (meaning that it stands alongside the majority of the 1994 group/ half of the Russell Group on entry requirements). On all other assessments the University has appeared within the Top 40 UK institutions (with two appearances within the Top 30 this year). Whilst Keele and Brunel are not bad institutions, it is a bit ignorant to categorise Kent as the same as them on the grounds of your peripheral knowledge of the University.(Original post by ultimate mashup)

Re: The best Universities?I reckon.(Original post by ultimate mashup)
Band 1: Oxbridge
Band 2: KCL, Imperial, UCL, LSE, Bristol, Warwick, Durham, St Andrews
Band 3: Rest of Russell Group Universities and some selected 1994 Group universities (Bath, York, Exeter, Lough, Lanc).
Band 4: Remainder of 1994 group and possibly Aston
Band 5: Average Universities: Hull, Goldsmiths, Keele, Brunel and some selected former polytechnics (e.g. Oxford Brooks, Trent University)
Band 6: Most Post 1992's, Bradford and Salford
Band 7: Joke Universities (e.g London Met, Thames Valley, Southbank)
