    -Writing to inform:
--The five W's and H; Who, What, Where, When, Why and How.
    --Only use facts!
--Must be a balanced piece of text, not biased
    --GAPS: Genre, Audience, Purpose, Style

    -Writing to describe:
    --Similes, metaphors and personification
--Say a lot about a little
    --Induce the five senses

    -Writing to persuade:
--FEAR; Facts, Exaggeration and Emotive language, Assertions and Anecdotes and Rhetorical Questions

    -Writing to explain:
--Use the five W's plus H
    --Balanced text
    --Clear factual language

    -Writing to argue:
    --I think, they think, smash
    --Relevant points
    --Plan your points out

    -Creative Writing:
--VIDS; Vocabulary, Imagery, Devices and Structure

Here is also a link to some good resources on BBC Bitesize: http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/gcsebit...glish/writing/

Today,I have revised Biology and Geography at home and I was the only person, who turned up for the Chemistry revision session at school and this has happened before-for Geography.I am not really going to have much a half term-off 3 days and in 3 days.I keep having dreams of get FULL UMS in all my exams this summer but I know that is not going top happen for the science exams-although,I do feel I have 3 decent chances of Full UMS-RE,Geography and Maths, and I am almost certain that I will get FULL UMS in Maths. a

If you have access to MyMaths use it, do questions, look a lessons...etc. If not take a look at BBC Bitesize they should probably have a section for GCSE Maths

Those maths dates are the dates of my real exams for maths. I know you weren't asking me, but I thought I'd offer advice because I LOVE maths and do well in it.
To revise I would go over the syllabus and anything your unsure of, to ask a teacher, refer to a textbook or use examsolutions the website.
Then once you understand the concepts I would apply it to a variety of questions, completing past papers.
If you really want to excel, look at A Level topics so you see where these concepts have derived from... Good luck!

Re: Current Year 10 Thread (2011/2012)
Like some of you others, I have an English exam on Tuesday. I got 67/80 which is an A* in the mock, but I don't think the examiners would have been as generous as my teacher. I'm hoping to revise a bit today by answering a few practise questions given by my teacher, and then possibly do a full past paper if I find time. I also need to revise for Spanish as that's a speaking exam and whilst I'm better at Spanish, that's only because I usually spend absolutely ages learning the stuff. With other exams at the moment, I wish the Spanish could have been left until the end of June/beginning of July considering that you can do the assessments whenever you wish...

I have a final drama workshop for unit 1 on Wednesday, but they're not too bad and you don't really revise for them!

So quite a busy week: English Tuesday, Drama Wednesday, Spanish Thursday.

And then after those it'll be half term where I MUST revise loads of science stuff. I hate learning loads of facts and stuff... Also, on the mark scheme the examiners are sometimes too vague; it's possible to explain something in a really scientific way and get it wrong because the examiners are looking for something more simple....

Btw those dates for your maths mocks are the same dates as my real GCSE Maths exams! Edexcel?

By my class's current calculations I need 66/80 in the English exams on Tuesday to get an A. 33/40 per exam. It's physically impossible for me to get an A*.

    :awesome:

Just go through your work in your books, mymaths or if you really need to get a CGP revision guide, they cover everything but for me there really isn't much need to revise maths-it is just so unchallenging for the likes of me.

What did you get for each piece?
    Descriptive: /20
    Narrative: /20
    Extended Literary Text Essay: /40
    Spoken Language: /20
    Oral: /40

I worked out that if 90% is an A* I need 67/80 in the exams, which is 33 and 34 and I'm aiming for full marks in reading so only 27 ish in writing! YES!!!! (just figured this out)

My physics is on Wednesday afternoon, good luck! :P

    Narrative: 16/20
    Text Essay: 32/40
    Spoken Lang.: 17/20
    Oral: I have no idea

We didn't work out exactly what the UMS was from raw marks, but we did a rough calculation and I got 93.75, so 94, so I need 66 to get 160, which we know is an A.

Oh right! I don't know the UMS I know the marks out of 80 in total (narrative, description and essay) are 60UMS abd that the exams are 80 all together... So the other 60 UMS is Oral and Spoken Language

Glad controlled assessment was worth the most! I done quite well those bits, dreading exam, come the 29th May...
