After telling someone the degree you study, what is their response?
Discussion for current and prospective students about social life at university, societies, what stationery and bedroom items to buy and anything else relating to life as a university student.

Re: After telling someone the degree you study, what is their response?
Computer Arts at Abertay, Dundee
"Oh, you're going to Aberdeen?" No...
Generally just a lot of
and dissapoint. Even when I explain to people what I'm actually studying... then again, it's a bit difficult talking about digital painting and 3D models to your 80-year-old grandmother who's never used a computer...

You must be good at fixing cars.
I don't have to ask what degree you do.
For engineering, it depends on the person.
If they have a degree or are a professional, it's usually 'ooo you must be clever' (I still haven't figured out how to reply to that)
If they're not the degree type, it's usually something about cars, boilers, their telephone line etc.
For my family, I don't think they get the engineering thing either. They keep telling people I study 'difficult mathematics'. Sigh. Which leads nicely to;
People start asking me to multiply horribly large numbers in my head, and question my maths ability when I don't answer in the next half a second. I try to explain that the maths content at university isn't three years of becoming lightning fast at arithmetic.(Original post by Ewan)
The most stupid thing is, because I'm a mathematician people immediately assume I'm good with numbers. I'm TERRIBLE at arithmetic, SERIOUSLY, DO NOT ASK ME TO DO YOUR SUMS FOR YOU.
They've usually lost interest at this point and after a brief pause, return to 'So... you can take a look at my car?'. -
Re: After telling someone the degree you study, what is their response?
Studing medicine.
"Oh, you must be clever" "That's hardwork" "So you're going to be a doctor?" all other sort of smart/hard working comments.
I usually laugh at them but don't say anything, when they ask why I'm laughing I explain how we're all wasters and having spent a year in medical school I'd never want to be treated by somebody ever. -
Re: After telling someone the degree you study, what is their response?Us physicists need people like you doing the laughable degrees in order to distinguish the good from the bad.(Original post by screenager2004)
"So what are you doing at uni then?"
"Sociology"
"oh..."
"... it includes a year at the University of Tokyo"
"OOOOOOOOOO WOW OMG OMG!"
To be honest it depends who is asking - my older relatives have genuinely said "You'll be Prime Minister one day" (bless them!), pretentious Biology first years have said "that's a doss degree" but each to their own. I've had people on TSR PM'ing me with torrents of abuse about how "Us physicists (and other such like respected students) need people like you doing the laughable degrees in order to distinguish the good from the bag [sic]."
Honestly I find people with opinions like that pretty pathetic. Usually children with no knowledge of the real world.
What is this "real world" you speak of? Will a fourier transform get me there?
Wait, you get to spend a year in Tokyo?
OOOOOOOOOO WOW OMG OMG! -

Re: After telling someone the degree you study, what is their response?Interior design..Textiles(Original post by Cheshire_Cat)
Interior Design:
"I love decorating rooms!".
"So you spend three years matching paint, wallpaper and fabric?".
"Do you want to be the new Laurence Llewelyn Bowen?".

Now that I'm doing Textile Design it's more like:
"I could never work a sewing machine".
Btw you could go throughout your whole degree without using one.
Are those actually degrees or just courses?

Re: After telling someone the degree you study, what is their response?Er, are you sure this isn't the case with all subjects? I've found myself saying things like "English? I nearly did that but changed my mind after yr 12" or "Philosophy? A friend of mine from back home does that!"(Original post by Vazzyb)
Interesting with Medicine.
Often people feel that they have to tell about someone they are related to or that they know, who also does Medicine
People are just trying to make conversation and you're judging them. Damn narcissistic med students. /sarcasm -
Re: After telling someone the degree you study, what is their response?Well how could I be sure? I dont study 'all subjects'?(Original post by Gauge/Gravity)

This is my observation about about people say to me after I tell them I do Medicine.
And when was I "judging" them? I think may be re read my post a couple of times... -
Re: After telling someone the degree you study, what is their response?
"Does that mean you'll be able to hack Facebook accounts?" - Probably the weirdest response I've had.
Usually it's the whole "oh so you'll learn how to fix computers?", or if they did ICT at GCSE/A Level "oh I hated ICT, bloody spreadsheets!".

Btw you could go throughout your whole degree without using one.
