In regards to philosophy I've had "So does God exist? Yes or no."
When I was doing art I had "Will you design my next tattoo?"
And for both I frequently get "Well that's not gonna get you very far is it?/What job do you get at the end of that?"
When I tell people I'll be studying Chemistry with Drug Discovery come September they usually say:

"You could open up your own shop" Erm no...I want to be a chemist not a pharmacist!

"Oh, maybe you'll find the cure for cancer!"

Also, my dad misheard me and told everyone I was going to be doing "Chemistry with Job Discovery" :p: I was asked by many people "eh what is that, do you try and find a job or a placement or something?"
I'll start to study Psychology in September.

From people who know me:

"Wait ... YOU?!?!"
"So people will enter your room slightly sad and leave it suicidal?"

That's because my attitude and behaviour are frequently compared to Dr. Cox from Scrubs

But usually:

"Ha, I'm the first to reserve a place on your couch!"
(yeah ... there'll never be a couch)
"So I'd better watch my words ..." (as if I care ...)

But usually people are really nice and positive about it. Most people just aren't aware about the fact that <50% of graduates opt to be Psychotherapists (which I clearly don't).
I'm not at uni yet, but when I tell people that I want to study Chinese, I usually get:
'cheng waaa'/other really cantonese and/or -ng sounds,
'Why don't you just go to China and save your money' (good point)
'Oh yeah, Chinese, Hindi and Portuguese are the languages to learn these days, big money'
'That's soooo coooool' ^^*
'You're so good at languages'

Oh, and sometimes I just say I study towards a BSc in Procrastinative Studies  Since "Procrastination" exists in German but is a rarely known and used word, most people tend to not know it but as they hardly want to admit that they are just like "Uh, sounds really interesting ... "

Cause Spanish, Arabic, Russian... dat all useless ;p
"I study radiography"

"Geography?"

or

"Radio what?!" "You're going to work with radios?"

or

"What's that?"

or

"You have to go to uni for that?!"
Best response when revealing that I would be studying Economics...
"Isn't that plants and stuff"
After some soul searching & many weeks deliberating... I decided that I wanted to follow my heart & study history.

So far, in response, I have had:

'What's the point of a history degree?'

or

'what kind of job do you want then, if you're studying history? Are there even any history jobs out there?'

or

'Ohhh, right'

or

'I thought you were doing computers!'

^^ From this I conclude that the majority of people think history is useless, that & I'm slightly deluded for changing my mind from computer science to history

Kinda sick of explaining that I will develop critical thinking, analytical & written skills etc etc.

Conversations normally end with... 'Are you going to be a history teacher?' *sigh*

I'm going to be doing art history

"what are you going to do with that then?"
"oh.... right...."
"but.... I thought you were smart"
"why don't you just study history?"
"can't you be an engineer/doctor?" (no, dad, I can't)
"oh, I think it's interesting!" (sometimes this is genuine, sometimes this is patronising)

So what do you study?

Multimedia Technology & Design
(Students automatically think of Media Studies) - I explain its mostly orientated around web development and 3D, and then I say 'I like it because its both creative and technical'.

Response: Oh cool, so can you make me a website?

Me: Yes but I wont lol

Grandparents think I want to be a video director or something lol.
"I was never good at maths in school..."

"wow, you're a genius"

"....you're gonna go into teaching or banking?..."

"are you crazy? how do you do it?"

......and it goes on :sigh:
"Bio what???", "Oh christ that sounds too hardcore for me", "You must be dead smart" and "Is that what CSI do?"...

I'm doing Applied Biomedical Science.

'I HATED Chemistry at school, I always used to hide in the toilets during my Chemistry lessons'
'If I was studing Chemistry, I would be under that train over there'
'That's the worse subject ever'
'Haha, I tried A Level Chemistry, and had to re-take SO many times'
'Ooh I have respect for you for doing Chemistry, everything must be SO HARRRD.'
'Oh right, what do you want to do with that?' To which I have NO ANSWER.
'Chemistry, hardest of all the sciences.'
'Do you... like... have to memorise the periodic table?'
'Do you know the periodic table off by heart?'
'Do you get to blow things up?'
'Do you have to spend hours in the lab?'
'Have u found the missing elements yet?'
'Have u found the cure for cancer yet?'

Oh, and...

'Oh are you enjoying that?'
Me: 'No, I hate it'
'Why do you Chemistry if you hate it?'
Me: 'I'm actually a sadist'

I remember I was going for a chem degree at one point... dodged the bullet there. :p:

I also get the "What do you study in that one??". It makes me sort of depressed that I couldn't actually summarise my own degree, so I just say "Clinical Physiology with Medical Microbiology"...

They'll never know. :shh:
Me: "I study French and Spanish."
EVERYONE in the world: "ohh, impressive. Whatcha gonna do with that now?"
"Can you read my mind?!"

*rolls eyes*

I always get "ooh REALLY? I've heard that's a lot of work"

... kinda makes it awkward past that point, what can you say other than "yeeahhh"

yeah me too..they give a look and say 'yes job with future' 'our country is known for this' when in reality i bet 99% of the people answered they dont even know what my course ACTUALLY is!
Everyone else's responses to physics/maths seem so nice! When I say I want to do physics or maths (changes on a weekly basis) I just get 'WHY?????'
