trying to explain to people that a languages degree isn't just learning to speak the language, and that we don't all become language teachers or translators... sigh
*sharp intake of breath (same sound a mechanic does before he says 'its gonna cost ya') followed by*...............really? but what about the competition
Me: "I'm training to be a barrister." Them: "Oh wow - I love coffee!" Me: "No no... I am... oh forget it. Yes, I make coffee."
Its funny because I've had this the other way round. I work in a coffee shop part time whilst doing my Alevels and the amount of people that look shocked when I say "I'm a barista" "surely you aren't old enough!" is a frequent response "I didn't know you could just do that on saturdays!" was a personal favorite
I tend to be asked while I'm on the train, sketching and they assume I'm doing an art degree of some kind. When I tell them I'm actually studying for a Law degree, they get impressed for all of about 2 seconds and then give me a shifty look before going back to their business.
