After telling someone the degree you study, what is their response?

Scroll to see replies

''history?? Erghh/oh my daze/gosh i hate history!/but it's so boring!''

"Why don't you just do an English degree?"

Because then I won't actually be trained in what I want to do.

"So, you are going to be writing for the sun/mirror/mail etc then?"

No, I want to work on the radio.
History-The usual response is telling me how pointless my degree is (coming from friends sat on jobseekers since leaving sixth form).
"Biochemistry? Oooh, that sounds really hard...you must be clever!"

(Yes, it is very hard, and no, you may think I seem clever but right now I certainly don't feel it)

Then that's usually followed by something like "so what actually is it?" or "I know someone who does Chemistry, you'd get on really well!" - I'm not doubting that we would but they aren't quite the same.
My degree is politics but I also do a few modules in history and will probably change to politics and history next year, so I say either depending on the situation.

'Politics' is usually, 'oh, so you want to be a politician?' No matter how much I explain that in the last year I haven't studied anything that would help me be an MP, and that most politicians usually study law, economics or PPE, they're convinced I'm just going to lie to them and take their money. People also tend to not talk to me much after.

History tends to be 'oh, okay'. That's about it. People seem to think it's easy and 'I done it at GCSE' and that puts them on a level with me.

I think the problem is with any 'academicy' degree is that it sounds so simple/easy; politics, history, philosophy etc. People don't realise that there's a lot more to having that sort of degree, and that most will tend to go into further education afterwards and into research.

Sometimes I wish I had done something useful instead of academic, like engineering or physics; but I'm completely useless with numbers.
When I told people I'm going to study physics and music in university, almost ALL of them responded with this : ' What are you gonna do as a career? ' Or ' Wow, that's a rare combination, what do you learn? ' ==' lolx

Then they usually say something like "so, like, is it really true that there are finite topological spaces with nontrivial homotopy groups?"

no way, really?
Haven't started yet but I start in September, and one of the only ones who knows what degree I'm doing is my Mom, who keeps singing to me the song from Avenue Q ("What do you do with a BA in English") but replacing it as "What do you do with a BA in Creative Studies" :facepalm2: she's actually very supportive  but she's also proud because eventually I'm hoping to go back and train as a midwife
i get :
"oh so do you want to be a translator or a teacher?"
because other wise the ability to converse with others is entirely useless obviously....
Well, after telling Icelanders here that I'm studying here for an MA in "Medieval Icelandic Studies" they seem rather pleased that a foreigner would be in interested in that; they're very proud of their country and their Viking/Medieval history (and rightly so).

I'm sure when I go back to England people are just going to say "What d'ya wanna do sumfink stupid like that for?". Bah, don't want to go back to England.

It's a mix of creative writing, journalism, theatre studies, media studies, digital communications and screenwriting and things like that  not exactly what I want to do with my life but I enjoy all those things, would like to be a journalist at some point but not forever, and it's better than being unemployed and skint!

"...what's linguistics?"
"....what languages do you speak?"

I only speak English.

People have to ask what Linguistics is?! Their degree must be even worse if they don't know

And that makes it perfect :colone:
The responce I get most of the time is a loud laugh or snort.

Apparently I don't look like someone who could be studying medicine.

Needs to be a subject you could bluff about though! Awkward conversation if you got caught out by saying you studied maths and was then asked really complex questions on it.......
"So you want to be a zookeeper then?"
