I study computer science and am one of the few girls on my course - when im out in clubs meeting people I dread the moment this conversation comes up because quite often a guy hears 'oh i study computer science' and leaves :| considering i dress like any other girl, wear just as much make up, do my hair to the best of my ability, wear ridiculous high heels - and the fact they were interested BEFORE i told them that is just ridiculous! I now offer that info right at the start then point them to the door!
That's not nice. Maybe those guys are mysogynists.

Them: Really I'd have thought you'd be doing music

    Me: Why's that

Them: The long hair and such

Lol are they stupid? Maths is applicable in everything.

    Last year I got:

Person: So what are you studying.

    Me: Business Computer Systems.

    Person: Oh....thats....nice *awkwardness*

To be fair it was an insanely boring thing to choose. I've switched now to Digital Media Development so yeah
another good one. I try to dodge the question saying: i'm going back to uni in october to do a masters - hope it'll help getting a proper job. The the inevitable question: what will you study:
    me: Petroleum Geophysics
them:  Not even going to get what that is, or
so is that something to do with petrol :teehee: or
so what can you/do you do with that?

    people are so funny

.... sorry to correct you but Ross did have a badge which said "geology rocks" on it.. so technically.. they might have been talking about that.
No you're right. That always got brought up as well.
Has been even worse describing engineering geology:

"Those are just two words put together. Did you just make that degree up"?

    Person:"Ah ok...."?
    *silence*
Me: "You have no idea what that is do you"?
    Person: "Nope".

"You're manufacturing rocks"? (To be fair that is something we do, as ridiculous as it sounds)

Has just gotten to the point where I make stuff up about terraforming new planets and trying to create real life rock-pokémon now.

hello fellow earth scientist I studied geophysics and i got:
"Is that like geography" sometimes:
    "is that geography and physics"

i just say it's about earthquakes and volcanoes to which they go:

"cool sounds so interesting - i'd love to do that!"

I want to become a real life volcano man - travel around the world and study volcanoes .
Hahaha, I always used to use the earthquake and volcanoes line too. Sounds cool and there is no need for anymore questions. Can then lead onto movies with ridiculous geological inaccuracies like The Core or the fast lava flow in Dante's Peak that clearly erupted from a composite volcano.
Though did get one teacher at school say:

"What's the point in studying that !? There aren't any volcanoes or earthquakes in the UK".

Haha, literally yesterday, my manager at work asked one of my colleagues who's starting Mathematics at uni in September the same question.

Manager says (paraphrased): "oh, I thought you were into something like music. You know, it's the long hair, you've got that look about you".

Hmm... they're not worth it. Anyone who loses interest in you as a person because of what degree you're doing (and in such a rude way) is just stupid. Honestly. I would never ditch the idea of dating a girl just because she studies something like computer science If anything it would interest me because it's a bit unusual.

As for me, I get the standard 'Oh you're going to do English literature? What do you plan on becoming, a teacher?' -_-"

That said, I really do plan on becoming a professor.

classic  going back to do a masters in petroleum geophysics. Any ideas what to tell people when they ask me? my current answer is: "they teach us how to find oil in rocks". Sounds lame...want to spice it up a bit

    Gut gemacht/muy bien

To be honest it's worse when people start reeling out random phrases they learnt at GCSE. I mean, when people tell me they're studying History I don't start shouting random dates at them
made me lol because it's something I do (I apologize) and because I intend to start doing exactly that to history students.
maybe throw in a random one, then act smug when they can't think of why it's important

    UPDATE

Random dude I sat next to on a flight:

"PPE? Oh so you're an intellectual."

Me: Oh stop it you :3

That is definitely how I intend to self-describe from now on...they might even believe me if they don't know me very well

I haven't started mine yet but when I say Motorsport Technology, the normal response is "Ah cool... What's that?"

    Sigh... :unimpressed:

    Art and Design:

"Oooh, what do you hope to do after that?"
"The next Picasso?" - It's always Picasso...
    "Are you good at drawing?"
"I'll have to see your drawings one day"
"Draw me!" - I don't only draw things btw

Probably hard to find guys with that same interest. If I met a girl who said she studied Comp Sci I'd think that's pretty cool (and luckily I'm not too nerdy - despite my avatar) and then we'd have a little to talk about.
