Depends on the person and the blog. Some examples:
- two I follow are about women recovering from the effects or rape, and hoping to be a positive influence on other women who have gone through the same thing
- one is written to give potential Durham applicants a taste of what it's like to be a Fresher
- one lists useful information and updates about Google's various products
- mine is a place I use to vent when I'm getting too bitchy/stupid to talk to real people, but can also share my problems with my closest friends

Basically you can do whatever you want with them.

hi, this is off topic but i'm from birmingham too (yawn) so you may have felt my pain, i'm thinking of applying to durham, what course are you doing and how are you finding it?
