Is STEP required and am I good enough for Mechanical Engineering at Imperial?

I want to study Mechanical Engineering at Imperial College London next year.

My GCSE grades are not impressive:
Maths - A
Physics - B
Biology - B
Chemistry - B
English - B

2010
AS Maths - B (C1-A; C2-A; S1-C)
AS Chemistry - D
AS Biology - D
AS Further Maths - dropped

I wasn't sure on what to do in the future so I was not that motivated. This made me not focus on my studies, hence the bad grades.

I just found out what I finally wanted to do last year. I want to become a mechanical engineer. There are a lot of reasons for it.

This got me motivated and....

2011
A2 Maths - A* (I resat S1 and got an A)
AS+A2 Further Maths - A (FP1-FP3 and M2-M4)
AS Physics - A

this coming school year, I'm studying:
A2 Physics
AS+A2 Chemistry
AS+A2 Biology (I didn't want to do this, but the college forced me to).

I'll definitely give this year my best shot.

Would I have a chance to get accepted at Imperial?
Is STEP required?

I'm also thinking of applying to Cambridge, but I think they'll stop reading my application after seeing the Bs on my GCSE.

Not sure about STEP. Look at the website? I don't think they do require it, I thought it was only Warwick and Cambridge for Maths?

Not sure what Imperial will say about you doing your A-levels over 3 years. Not sure what Cambridge will say about the GCSE's but if you don't try you won't know. However, there are a lot of incredibly strong candidates applying to both of these universities so you will have to stand out!
