First Year Politics Modules?

Hi, I'm doing a joint honours so I only get to pick 2 of the 5 optional Politics modules...what are other 1st years thinking of choosing? Is there anyone who's done 1st year and has any advice? Really stuck! Thank you

I've chosen Security Studies, but only because there's a module on the history part of my degree I really want to take so I can't take the History of Western Political Thought because my credits would be too much! I think it sounds amazing though

What are the options this year? Globalisation is good, more to do with a lecturer who really gets into it and puts loads of extra notes up online.

I'm torn between three really, and I need to choose two of them. I'm choosing between Comparing Modern Polities, Intro to History of Western Political Thought, and British Politics. I've got an A level in Politics so thought I'd have a head start on the British Politics module? Also wondering if the History of Western Political Thought module might be a bit dull?

I did Globalisation and British Politics, both were really good and my friends on straight politics who did all of the modules you mentioned said the same. Western Thought is political philosophy, so if you fancy a bit of Plato then that's what you'll get. I didn't do Politics A Level so can't really comment on the link, but yeah if you know the basics of the Westminster Model and other background knowledge it would only help.

What things did you do in the British Politics module? Right now I'm swaying towards Comparing Modern Polities and History of Western Political Thought, purely because they sound really interesting, and I didn't know if I'd be better doing something different?

What joint honours are you doing? I thought Comparing Modern Polities was compulsory?

I'm doing Politics and Hispanic Studies, so I only have one compulsory Politics module, and have to choose two more to do...I have to do Intro to Political Analysis

I was thinking about doing security studies.. But not sure about my other choice.

We don't get any choice for Hispanic Studies do we?

Ahh nice to find someone else who's doing the same! Yeah I'm a bit confused about the Hispanic Studies side of it now, surely we'll be taking SOME modules in Spanish this year? It seems crazy that we wouldn't, given we're supposed to be planning our year abroad once we start 2nd year and we're doing fewer Politics modules this year than we would otherwise do...

Yeah.. We definitely do the compulsory language module each year (I think) and apart from that I was expecting a few choices.

Then again maybe we're just gonna wait till we get there to choose. I was surprised that we were supposed to send off our politics ones so early.. Which reminds me; I should do that at some point...

I remember at the offer holders' open day they held for people doing dual-honours-including-a-language degrees that the guy who did the Hispanic Studies talk said we could choose Hispanics modules that complimented the other subject we were studying, so I'm sure we'll be fine  are you on Facebook btw?

Ok that sounds good. It's a shame there aren't more politics modules that put an emphasis on EU or south america. Maybe that's just for the first year.

And yeah, my names Jack Parry (from oxford)

There's Latin America and EU modules in the 2nd year. You can specialise in either in Year 3.

You do an overview of British political history from the 20th century onwards. Then look at certain themes, such as where power is really centred, models of state and look at Big Society etc. We had a cover lecturer for the module who was really good, he was popular with the girls too, hah.
