Unlucky .. they still might accept you though? Or has it turned unsuccessful on UCAS already?
I think they haven't received my results yet, one of my teachers will call the uni to explain the situation (I was very sick during the examination and its pretty obvious my mock bio result is a 7 and in the exam it's a 5) I don't know if it will help, but I have no hope. I'll retake bio

I see .. well if your UCAS track has changed from conditional to unconditional or unsuccessful, they've received your results and have made a decision.. best of luck anyways, I hope you get what you want

The head of admissions is away and they won't decide until after next week apparently. I met 2 of the conditions that they have asked in the offer letter and I missed 1 of them, I hope they'll say it's ok and next week I'll be saying see you in september

Ah, well there's still some hope then, so don't get too down. It's not unheard of for Cardiff to accept people who missed their offers by a little. In the meantime try not to think of it too much, it's all out of your hands now.
But man do you IBers get your results quickly.. the rest of us have to wait 'til August..

I still haven't heard anything yet. I was told that the decisions would be made this week.

    Hello there Cardiff-ites.
I am re applying, having been turned down for entry this year (though I hadnt applied to Cardiff) and am just wondering if candidates had found that the people who have been accepted this year the ones with the higher number of GCSE A* results. Does anyone know if applying with a actual A level results helps to mitigate having only 4 A* and 4 A at GCSE (plus 2 B and 2 C)
Hope someone is still on this thread to answer, as I can guess that a lot of you are sorted and arent visiting the page so much. Many thanks indeed for your help.

I had similar grades to you too (4 A* and 3A) and I'm so worried that I won't get in :/ i went to a medical talk on admissions to cardiff around march time and they said the minimum is normally 5 A* and most the people there had 7 A* or more. You get marked out of 27 for your top 9 GCSE's with an A*= 3 points, A=2 points and a B= 1 point. So you would have 21/27 and it then depends on everyone else's marks. I didn't apply last year mainly because of my poor GCSE's but i also had no w/e so im going to also try in september with my A-level results. Hopefully if I've done well it should cancel out my Gcse's. You should be looking to get at least one A* in your A-levels rather than the standard AAA if u feel your GCSE's aren't that good (which they are btw )

Ok, This time I called the uni to ask when they will decide about the applications. After the A levels results are released, the admissions staff will have a meeting to discuss the situation of people like me. Do you have any idea how long it will take them to get back to us? Because if they reject me I will either study for retake or will go for clearing. I always thought I would try again and not give up, but I feel so tired. Plus I am already 20 years old I desperately want to go to uni

    Hi blueclearsky
Thanks for the help - good luck in your application too. So did they suggest in the admissions talk that having good A level results would help to take their eyes off the GCSE results. Maybe 2 A* would help? (and an A of course - fingers crossed for that chemistry....

well they didnt exactly say it but you would expect that to be the case. the first thing they look at are a-level grades and if they are exceptional like 2 A* then your definetly in i'd say and hopefully u have a good UKCAT score and PS to back it up. GCSE's are only a small deciding factor once u apply with your a-levels because u sat them such a long time ago and they'll see your academic improvement in you A-level results (which are much harder).

Are predicted or expecting 2 A*? and yes that final chemistry paper was dreadful. did u do aqa? If anything you need to make sure you aced biology and chemistry, but especially chemistry.

At the open day they said that their offers are based on an assessment of PS and interview performance only. They use academic performance (i.e. GCSE and A level results) only to select who to interview. After that everyone who gets an interview starts with a 'clean sheet'.

They said that last year they interviewed around 30% of applicants and the cut off was 25 points i.e. you needed 7 A*s and 2 As. They include your GCSEs in Maths, English and two sciences plus the other best five GCSE results. No short courses are allowed. They give extra credit for A levels but not much. I think they assume people will get 3As and they don't really care about whether they are A*s or not.

If you're worried about your GCSEs it might be better to apply to other med schools that rely on UKCAT and/or PS rather than grades.

I think your best bet would be to ring admissions and ask, there's no harm in doing that. I think Godfrey is right in that they give extra credit for A2 results but have no idea how much extra that is so a quick phone call should tell you one way or the other.

When do we actually find out that we've gotten in, if we're on the waiting list?

Okay I've applied to Cardiff and it's currently my firm offer, I applied with 6A* and 3A's (24 points). Now two girls in college applied and got rejected from cardiff, they had 5A*'s.

Now here is the interesting bit, firstly me and them two girls got into the same unis except Cardiff, so you can assume that since they had 23 points the cut off was 24 points, since they got rejected in the first batch and before interview. What will interest you most is the fact that the one girl had already completed a set of alevels and first year of uni. She therefore had 3A's. Through asking the admissions team she found out that if you have the required entry grades and your GCSES score were not high enough then you recieve a bonus 5 or 6 points for you alevels. ( I can't remember how much sorry, but i remember thinking a scenario like this and working out i had way above the maximum 27 points). Sadly her A's were not in the required subject!

Provided you had A or A* in the compulsory gcses subjects (you need to check on cardiff admissions policy on ther website) then you should have a decent tally of points

Hope this helps! Sorry for such a long ass essay.

    Good Luck with applying again!

I applied September last year with my actual A Level results and I only have 2 A*'s at GCSE so from my experience, applying with good actual A Levels can make up for not having enough A*'s at GCSE... always best to check with the uni though
