Re: Should we bid for the Euros?I was thinking this as well - two great stadiums in the bernabeau and nou camp may not stage euro/wc games in our lifetime. Plus Spain would be great from a fans point of view with the weather, coast, malagas etc(Original post by robocop1andahalf)
Why not Spain for 2020? They have not hosted anything since the 82 World Cup whereas England did have Euro 96, plus the advantage of being in a Western country big on football with plenty of stadia, need I go on?
I wonder if they'd stage the final at the bernabeu because it's in the capital, even though nou camp has 100,000 capacity. -
Re: Should we bid for the Euros?
i would like there to be a euros or world cup held whilst i am still alive in this country :'D however it appears most other european countries try desperately come up with reason/excuse to hate on england, which sucks
last world cup bid, as well as majority of the previous eurovision song contests......... rrrrrrrrr -
Re: Should we bid for the Euros? There are 4 pots, with Poland assigned to Group A and Ukraine to Group B.(Original post by wildrover)
I was refering to the finals, which will look something like this;
Pot 1
Poland
Ukraine
Netherlands
Spain
Pot 2
Germany
England
Italy
Portugal
Clearly any of the teams in pot 2 would love to play Poland or Ukraine yet Spain may end up playing Germany. -
Re: Should we bid for the Euros?Well you get the idea, Ukraine and Poland are being seeded as top tear teams, weaker nations shouldn't be able to host, let alone 3 of them.(Original post by Helpful_Charlie)

Re: Should we bid for the Euros?for their world cup bid, the plan was to have the Bernadeu as the stadium for the final.(Original post by Fusion)

Re: Should we bid for the Euros? In '82 the opening game was in the Nou Camp and the final in the Bernebau - perhaps do the opposite this time? If the tournament is expanded to 24 teams then what would be the maximum number of stadia needed and would any cities have two stadia as venues?(Original post by Fusion)

Could be no more of a joke than Switzerland and Austria being top seeds in 2008 could it?(Original post by wildrover)

Anyways, regarding 2020 I would not be at all surprised if Turkey got it - big nation, love their football, always been bidding for this and the Olympics too but to no avail, were one vote away from getting 2016 and may get the sympathy votes. Unless we see Istanbul getting the 2020 Olympics or near enough? -

Re: Should we bid for the Euros?
The developing countries will be less likely to commit to hosting in the near future imo.
We're going through a massive economic slump and austerty measures and the hardest hit will be those who relied heavily on other economies.
We saw Spain's performer at the Eurovision song contest talk about how they were asked not to win because it's too expensive to host the contest in the current climate.
A lot of countries will not want to invest such huge sums into football stadia and infrastructure until the future looks better imo. Ukraine has spent a staggering £3.5bn on hosting Euro 2012Last edited by Zerforax; 19-06-2012 at 11:51. -
Re: Should we bid for the Euros?
Why would they give it to us in 2020 when we had it in 1996? That looks like too short a gap to me, there will have only been 5 tournaments between those.
I quite like the idea of that joint Scottish/Welsh/Ireland bid but I can't imagine UEFA wanting 3 countries hosting it.Last edited by Sephiroth; 19-06-2012 at 19:30. -
Re: Should we bid for the Euros?St James' Park. It will not be called Sports Direct Arena in 2020 (as the name change is temporary). Even if it is, or has another commercial sponsor, the name is likely to revert to St James' for the tournament (just like when St James' hosts Olympics games this summer). You won't, or certainly shouldn't, hear anyone call it Sports Direct Arena during the Olympics.(Original post by TRS-T)

So just call it St James' as that's what it is. -
Re: Should we bid for the Euros?
i think it's always a good idea to try for these things, providing we can committ financially. I know it will be generally less of an investment for us though, than it would be for eastern european countries as we already have excellent football infrastructure.
It would be good to see, although I would like to travel elsewhere, as I am a travel nut
