If it can be read, it can be discussed here.

    Actually I mean pages.

Let's say you pick up a new relatively-unknown book and it's mediocre but still quite appealing to your tastes - how many pages do you read before putting it down?
Be honest please because I will use the information I get from this thread (if there are enough replies)

Really depends on the circumstances, time wise and what book it is.

If I'm just at a loose end with five minutes spare, then only a few pages. Just before bed, I can read a number of chapters, depending on how good it is. If I'm on holiday, I can easily read half a book in one sitting.

Harder reads I tend to read less in one go. Easier reads, more.

If it's a book I haven't read before and I'm picking it up for the first time, I'll usually read a good chunk of it to get into the flow of things, so about 80-100 pages.

Usually about 100-150 pages? I'll only stop reading on chapters though if they have a memorable page number/if the page number and chapter are similar (eg if it's page 121, or chapter 9 page 93 or something), otherwise I tend to just cut off at a memorable number, regardless of how close to the end of the chapter it is or how much I'm enjoying it.

I have to stop after about 20 or so pages on a given 'session'. That's not to say I'm a slow reader, I just need time to digest what I've read. I usually take about ten minutes break, before going back again. All this said, this is when I am at home and have other distractions. At school I used to sit in the library for a solid two hours reading, in which time I'd ordinarily get through about 150 pages.

You could always invest in a book mark?

Ha, I do this, I can never stop on an odd chapter! It's odd, but it's just an excuse to read more, really! :ninja:

OP: About 100 pages, but if I'm not tired and really like the book, I'll easily finish it. I read fast

    Really depends on the book

I remeber reading 100s of pages of Harry Potter back in the day in one go- If the book is really engaging, I tend to not be able to put down...even when I'm in the toilet :ahee:

If its a tedious, difficult book (reading for Personal Statement/ wider reading), I probably read a few pages now and again. Possibly a chapter if I skim read it :pierre:

Not a lot. I procrastonate a lot but just one day, maybe one day I will pick up that goddam book and read it!

But rest assure, once I am into a book I will read a lot. :pierre:

I do have several, I just prefer to go by the numbers, arbitrarily creates more feelings of inner peace and all that

Yay, not just me! Must be annoying in books with very long chapters though!

Depends a lot on where I am. If I'm in my room or about to go to sleep I'll be lucky to read more than 20 pages. But if I’m in the library or in the conservatory reading all afternoon, I could easily read the entire book without stopping (assuming I'm enjoying it.)

Depends on the book. I was reading Lolita this morning from 9-11 and only got through about 40 pages which was annoying since it needs to be finished soon! It's not that I'm not enjoying it, but I always take longer with books that require more thought.

I can read a full book without putting it down if it is really gripping.

It really depends on the book. If it's a long, slow book with long chapters then it may be one or two but if it's something by someone who uses ridiculously short chapters (Milan Kundera for example) then I can read ten, twenty, thirty...
