What does registering involve on the 1st/2nd October?
Its weird how timetables start on a Friday ... do we get them when we register?

Ems x

Registering involves taking some type of ID with you, (probably not for this years freshers) but you could pay some or all of your fees off for the year, you get a slip of paper with all your library card details on so that you could later collect it and you got your photograph taken (this was unexpected for me and i looked a state so just keep this in mind when you go for yours! ). I was a bit hungover at the time but i think this was all we did.

You get a lecture timetable when you enrol on your courses which are a few days after registration but finding out about your seminars/practical classes etc. depends on the course. Some people find out at enrolment but for psychology i found out a departmental talk at the end of the week.

Ahh right. Thank you. I'm so scared that i'm gonna end up with no friends here because i've decided to commute and by the time we go to lectures, everyone would have gone out together in freshers week and got to know each other :frown: Ho hum ..

I think it would be fair to say that the experience you will have in Fresher's Week and beyond will be different because you're not living on campus, but that doesn't mean to say it'll be bad.

Living on campus means you immediately gel with people as you're all in the same boat, living in a strange place. There are 'block reps' (2nd/3rd year students who look after you and guide you to the bar etc) and the JCR organise nights out etc.

I met lots of people in Fresher's week, from my college, who weren't in my block and we simply got chatting in the bar, so if you can it may be advisable to try and go on the college nights out and get someone to pick you up from campus (if that's possible) to take you home - unless you live really close and can get a taxi of course.

Personally I made a few really good mates on my course as well, although I don't tend to socialise with them as much.

Commuting will mean a different Uni experience but you should still have a great time. Try and get involved in Fresher's week and definitely join a society or two - you'll meet lots of like minded people there! If you're interested in running then feel free to join the Running Club! (Sorry, shameless plug there!)

If you want any advice etc then just ask.

Don't worry about it! I know someone who commutes and he had a great freshers week. If you commute you still have a college tutor (like people living on campus) and they bring you together so that you meet all the other people that live off campus.

nahh what ya gotta do, in my experience (yes yes i know i havent started yet, lol im just making this up) is make a good mate in a college of your choice, who lets you crash either in there bed  (doesnt have to be just a mate, but whatever) or on the floor. Then you will get to go out on the college nights and not need to get urself home, and youll meet all the people in that flat!
Good Idea eh?

Everyones gonna be getting smashed in the pubs and clubs and i dont even drink :frown: i feel 12 again. hehe.

Haha, well ... i think my bf would object to that :p: It'll soon be October, i'm so nervous. If you see me (blonde, fringe, 5ft tall, gnome size), walking around like a loner, say hello! hehe.

lol gnome size

staying in a mates room, your boyfriend gets very jealous?
(p.s you were the one to put sexual connotations to it, not me!)

You: "Then you can crash in my room" ... staying in a mates room would be referring to someone i knew then. :p: and Yes, yes, i stereotyped you as a typical lads lad. :pepsi:

Ive just sent a letter to the car parking office (thanks LubyLoo) to claim my spot there.

well there you go! hehe
Can I just say to all Freshers starting in October...

Don't bloody bother with the meetings in the morning! They don't check attendance or anything stoopid like that. Seriously, have a good time at night and don't stress about having to be up at the crack of dawn to get to a fire safety meeting. I'll sum it up for you: Fire is bad. Be careful. And the fire blanket is your friend. The end.

wow, that was a useful summing up, i wouldn't have known otherwise
Cheers for the advice tho
Yes. You'll learn to love fire blankets

And despite what people tell you, fire extinguishers DO make good toys when you're a bit pissed at 4 in the morning, but just remember you'll have to clean up all the foam when you wake up. And trust me when I say it gets EVERYWHERE.

...and pay for the cost of it too.

I remember waking up in Manchester when I was a student there and finding my kitchen covered in white powder. Being a bit sleepy I wondered if the roof had caved in and it'd snowed. Then I smelt the burning smell - someone had decided it'd been a good idea to grill a light fitting.

Yes, and it doesn't cost a thing. You're supposed to register them with the porter if they're staying in your room, but to be honest no-one ever does that and it's completely pointless. In fact, the porter would probably be very surprised and stare at you blankly if you went and registered someone staying in your room.

You can have as many people as you want, whenever you want staying in your room.
