Re: Asset Management Summer Internships 2012How do you even apply for anything with these firms? I can't see any information about careers at all (other than a contact email).(Original post by Hackett)

Networking is the only way. -
Re: Asset Management Summer Internships 2012You couldn't be more wrong. Yes, there is a shade of elitism about this stuff but that is the way life is. I have no family or friends in the industry but I have had no trouble getting interviews (admittedly, I missed out on some because I didn't hear about them soon enough) and you'll find that, if your bringing something to the table, people will be more than happy to talk to you. Even if they don't do interviews you will find that people are willing to help/talk to you. For example, I am doing work experience at an HF that "doesn't do" work experience because the guys there wanted to help me out.(Original post by Tateco)
Can't get much more elitist than that...
There are way more internships going on in AM than most people think though (although not all of them are for undergrads). The reason why is that they have no trouble getting the right people without advertising...think about that. Also, AM is ****ing brutal atm, someone I spoke to recently told me they had an experienced fund manager offer to work for them for free. In other words, if you don't go to Oxbridge your going to have to make it happen yourself.Last edited by crcr; 17-04-2012 at 19:30. -

Re: Asset Management Summer Internships 2012I forgot to say that the main issue is actually whether you live in London or not. Imo, that is more important than what uni you went too, how smart you are, and the general state of the AM job market.(Original post by Hackett)
Couldn't have said it better. -
Re: Asset Management Summer Internships 2012You make a strong argument, but the fact they don't publicly advertise these roles surely means contacts of current employees have a greater advantage. What university do you go to if you don't mind me asking?(Original post by crcr)

Re: Asset Management Summer Internships 2012Yes, but that isn't relevant. For example, one firm sponsors an Msc program at a local uni (very obscure uni) and takes some applications from there. However, most applications are people who speculatively apply though (as I said before, the industry is very competitive).(Original post by Tateco)

Also, it isn't a strong argument, its fact. If your still a student, you've just been handed the keys to the ****ing vault because most people don't realize this until its too late (I didn't, I have just been unbelivably lucky). To give another example, a huge investment house (~£30bn) had 14 applicants and interviewed 7. Compared to the 1000 or so people who apply to Baillie Gifford, I like those odds. However, the interviews are more demanding and if you don't know your **** it can be embarassing (I, unfortunately, speak from experience).
Its also worth mentioning that the same thing applies to graduate jobs. Most years these places don't need people so when they do hire, you have to be top of the list. For example, I had a meeting with someone who is looking to hire someone at some point in the next two years, he is building a shortlist of people he knows already.
You should be able to work out the uni from the information given, not a target though and not in London. -
Re: Asset Management Summer Internships 2012What do you mean by keys to the vault, how does being young help?(Original post by crcr)

Re: Asset Management Summer Internships 2012Read what I wrote again. It isn't to do with being young but you can't spend your time doing all the stuff above if you have left uni, you have to get a job. either way, my actual point was that most students don't bother to get in touch with people who matter.Last edited by crcr; 18-04-2012 at 13:04.

What investment team are you working in? I'm in property investment research. Think I'm going to stay in university of London halls. Anyone else doing that? -
