I study French, and am hoping to base my dissertation on how French opinion towards Jews changed during WWII, or something similar. It has to be around 8,000 words. Not looking forward to it already!

Sounds quite interesting :yep: Are you writing yours in French or English? Or do you not get a choice?

Yeah mostly, I do like language, especially language change though. I find it so interesting how words become obsolete and others change their meanings.
I did my A Level research project on language change and up until the last few months of my second year, had planned on basing my dissertation on it

    High 5!

Hey, I'm a geographer and I think I'm going to look into how educational attainment at university is gendered and whether the "place" of university reinforces good, bad and gendered practices in terms of achieving grades. Whack some nice little stats, some interviews and social theory and hey presto, hopefully a dissertation...

    Hi Everyone,

Im starting researching for my disertation and know what I will be writing about just finding it hard to put together a title??

I am going to look at the use of language particualarly in the work of Spanish artist Jaume Plensa and compare and contrast it to the work of artists from an exhibition I saw at Tate Liverpool curated by Carol Ann Duffy called the Sculpture of Langague.

Also, any other artist suggestions who have been in fluenced by language particularly sculptors??

    Thankyou!

I'm a History-Politics student and I'm doing my dissertation on the subject of American loyalists (loyal to the crown) in New York City during the American Revolution. Basically emphasising how contrary to American historiography on the subject the Revolution was a civil war. Which essentially means spending half of the next year reading old colonial newspapers and flicking through thousands of pages of reports and military records in the National Archives.

It's 15,000 words though, which seems so much more than what everyone else is doing. It's also worth 50% of my final year, which in turn is worth over 50% of my entire grade. So basically about 25% of my degree classification will be based upon this

It's all pretty exciting! I like to read about what other people are doing

Mine is 1/3 of my final year which is 2/3 of my overall degree (I cannot for the life of me figure out what percentage that is overall )

History student here, my dissertation's going to be on the affects of Agent Orange and also how far America have ever assumed responsibility for the health of both their own citizens and the Vietnamese. Erring on the political side of things, but my tutor loves it, and as a topic it falls very much in line with one of the modules already taught under the history school so they can't complain really.

That's good I'd never be able to do all that in French...it's just added pressure as well :sigh: Hmm, I get that too sometimes. I bribe myself with chocolate to get me working :awesome: ...although the chocolate seems to get more attention than reading but still

When I was doing my undergrad dissertation, I'd write to one of my tutors every few days telling her how many words I'd done (bear in mind I was rather crazy at this point and needed quite a lot of support). The need to tell her a suitable greater number than the last time was quite a good motivator.

I know one of my friends had a Facebook count-up in her status, updating every few days the amount of words she'd written. I think I might do that this time around :yep:

I might do this with my supervisor Although I'll probably do this after adding just one more word...he'll get 10,000+ emails So if I mysteriously disappear at some point, he's probably killed me :ninja:

At least you've bought something productive. I went to Primark today, for example

I still bought some clothes too...y'know, so I can be wearing something nice and warm when I'm writing my diss. Yes. :ninja:

Yes. We're very studious and what better way to prove it than buying clothes. :ninja:

Ah, the back to university stationary shopping spree. I have yet to go on mine, but purchasing stationary always makes me very happy, although I swear I don't end up using half of what I buy o_O.

Saaaame! Although I really ought to spend more time researching than buying all sorts of stuff which will stay at the bottom of my bag/under the bed/stuck in a tree...:ninja:
