Re: Official Dissertation Thread - 2011-2012We don't have a page limit. My 10,000 one is around ~80 pages. The one I'm doing now will be about half that :P(Original post by Peel)
Ouch! Well, my dissertations a bit different I think to most unis ... it's supposed to be around 100 pages long (including appendices). Though my tutors been nice and said 50 is fine if it's all quality
But yeah absolutely quality over quantity. -
Re: Official Dissertation Thread - 2011-2012
I'm doing English Lit, currently working on a dissertation on "Thomas Hardy and Perception" (with a side order of theory from Walter Pater and Foucault). Haven't started writing it yet, struggling to cram all the ideas and research I've done into a coherent plan and somewhat worried about stringing my rather-simple argument out for 8000 words. It's due on May 5th. Anyone know any good tips for dissertation structure?

Re: Official Dissertation Thread - 2011-2012Oh I didnt realise 10,000 words was so many pages! Don't feel so bad anymore(Original post by Akkuz)

Mines mainly a computing based progress so it can be extremely slow at times :/

Re: Official Dissertation Thread - 2011-2012
Intro is now 973 (incl. subheadings).. just need supervisor to look over it
.
Onwards and upwards.. to the discussion chapter
from scratch eeek.
I'm starting to apply for masters' programmes.. am I wise?
Do I really want to put myself through another dissertation next year?
-
Re: Official Dissertation Thread - 2011-2012I was thinking this too. The thought of doing a 3rd dissertation next year is mighty depressing haha but I'm sure once the time comes around it'll be okay!(Original post by tradingmyheartforyours)

And having already done one, it wont feel as bad. -
Re: Official Dissertation Thread - 2011-2012Good luck! Personally I will be very happy to be back on a course next year where all assessment is by exams!(Original post by tradingmyheartforyours)

Re: Official Dissertation Thread - 2011-2012I chose my modules purposefully this year to ensure there were no exams(Original post by Becca-Sarah)

Re: Official Dissertation Thread - 2011-2012Try to imitate the style in which academics write? Obviously, keep it to your natural style and don't go overboard but just keep reading and really look at how they write.(Original post by Mr Advice)
Anyone know how to improve the style of writing? I'm told I write well but not elegantly :s -
Re: Official Dissertation Thread - 2011-2012Hmm, yeah I could try that. But it's so tough.(Original post by aeterno)

good luck to you too!
ouchie! if you manage your time well, it should be fine! time-management is the key
I'm going to meet a professor tomorrow at a London uni tomorrow, who's agreed to help me with my research paper
He's the author of a book I randomly picked up, emailed him..and he agreed to meet me. So, it's definitely worth emailing academics and asking for help - after all, if its a subject area they love and work on for a living, they would probably be happy to help!

Re: Official Dissertation Thread - 2011-2012Sweet! Congratulations(Original post by aeterno)
Yes!
I got an extension for it just in case so slightly less panicky when my supervisor was taking ages
It looks so pretty all bound and stuff
You?

Supervisor is reading over my draft over the holiday. I'll make the changes she suggests then hand it in
In the meantime I've started my 2nd dissertation. So stressed out!

Awesome! Hopefully you won't have too many changes to make
Why would you subject yourself to such torture?!
Good luck!

I hope so, I hope so..
God knows. I'm just crazy. I only need something like 65% on this report
but I'm aiming for 75-80%. Just formulated my own statistical framework to make it all fancy and clever. I have no idea what I'm doing but it looks good
