The Student Room Group

Whats college like?

I'm a recent Year 11 student and I'm wondering what college is like so if your a current college student then please tell me what experiences you've had and the day to day life of college.

P.S Also explain what six form is and what is the common room?
It's what dreams are made of.

What sort of college are you refering to? If you mean a polytechnic or technical college the ones I have been to have been terrible full of chavs, antisocial kids that have been sent their by the job centre or connexions to keep them off the streets. Some colleges are okay but from my experiance they will offer you no support when people threten you and have major drug issues in them. Some of the colleges on the other hand can be very good but they have to have good tutors it's worth doing research into the colleges maybe just walk through the campus on an average weekday to see what people are like.
I go to a college so we don't have a common room.

For some people it's fun. For others, not so much.

My first college was great in that the canteen was huge, the library was damn good, it was big so there were always empty classrooms you could sit in and you were quite independent. But the teachers weren't close to students and therefore those of us who struggled sort of disappeared from their radars. It was tough **** if you needed help.

The one I'm at now has a rubbish canteen, rubbish library, rubbish buildings, the students are very bitchy but the teachers help out more and give more guidance to students who need help.

Overall, the first college was better for hanging around and was more relaxed. The second is only good if you need pushy teachers.

EDIT
Go to a sixth form or a very respectable college. The 'other' colleges are full of people you really don't wanna be around.

6th form is like a normal school but teaches A levels and a common room is where students can socialise although many normal colleges will not have these.

College is basically the most important year of your life any changes you do in college will effect your career choice in the future so you basically have to do the specific gcse courses to do specific a levels and then do specific courses in uni. Common room is just a room were sixth form or college students go to revise quietly or just relax during their spare time.

P.s its my second day at college

Honestly.. it's tough. Sure you can have fun but you unlike GCSEs, you have no choice but to start studying hard from the very first day.

Sixth form is attached to school so the students range from 11-18 years and the years after GCSE are called sixth form when you do A-Levels or BTECs. A sixth form college is where students can study A-Levels or BTECs or vocational courses. It consists of ages 16-19 usually. Other colleges are further education colleges where you can study A-Levels, BTECs, vocational courses, diplomas, etc.

Common rooms are just rooms where you can hang out during free periods and where you can study.

I'm at sixth form and I've been in for two days and I'm already finding it tough. Work hard!

LOL! I'm actually getting crap grades but I'm not too bothered.

My college would have to close if all the chavs were kicked out haha! And if you wanna study with them around, good luck.

Mine too but I can't blame you, I had to learn most of my content at home since the teacher can't teach because shes saying shut up every 2 minutes...

Last year was a nightmare but this year doesn't seem to be going so bad. Everyone in my college just cares more about friends than studying.
