Should Ireland become part of the United Kingdom again?
Historically both countries are linked. We share tied values and, if reunited, would be significantly stronger together.

We could end the problem in Northern Ireland (The IRA would be isolated in their position and outnumbered by the will of the Irish people...the Ulster terrorist groups would probably just disappear).

I understand the Royal family is a contentious issue but to be honest we really need to see a British republic anyway so lets get rid of them and look toward the future.

It is a dream of mine to see the UK reunited with the Irish peoples (treated and respected fairly this time with full apologies to the crimes we commited against them in the past).

Do you think this is ever possible in our life time or just a pipe dream of mine? I believe most Irish people are probably bitterly opposed to ever rejoining the UK?

Only if the majority of the Irish public supported such a move, and their democratically elected representatives enacted any integration process.

'Should' is an extremely subjective term.

No, since the UK experience some problems in keeping the current England and Scotland united, for example.

I saw a documentary with Tony Robinson talking about untapped gold veins in Ireland, other than that, I doubt they could offer much.

Your from London, do you have a family connection with Ireland?

Field Marshal Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington.

The guy who defeated Napoleon at Waterloo, basically.

That's not what the Duke would have wanted to hear.
It's probably not. He admittedly counted himself as English so I'll respect his wishes and see him that way.

The biggest problem is that the people simply don't want it, something drastic would have to happen. They fought for freedom for 800 years and they're proud now that they have it, there's a definite feeling that they'd be betraying their ancestors to accept a monarch again. You'd probably have an equally good chance of getting the United States to accept the British monarch as their head of state again.

There's a part of me that's slightly sad about it, the two countries have a lot in common and there are definitely a lot of good links as well as bad. On the other hand, it's good that both countries have their individual cultures and are recognised as such by the EU and UN. There's of course no economic reason why it couldn't work, but then there's no such reason why Australia or France couldn't join the UK either, but that's equally unlikely.

As a non-Irish person I'd have to say no.

Ireland's now basically a massive burst housing bubble graveyard.

Northern Ireland is useless as it is.

    At least Scotland has oil.

I don't mean to be harsh, just realistic. Sentiment is not reason enough to do such a thing.

Ireland has a higher GDP per capita than the UK.

Yes I do have some family from Ireland but mostly I recognise the shared history we have and would like to see us united in peace and economic prosperity.

He wasn't a particularly nice man, just a bad ass.

I posted him because he is one of the many "Anglo Irish" people who contributed significantly to our history.
