Re: Training Contracts 2014I applied for both earlier this year as a non law candidate. I heard back from A&O about a week after submitting (though I submitted on the final day possible) and about 3 weeks after applying to Slaughter and May.(Original post by Med2Ky)
If anyone has applied (this round or before) to Slaughter and May or A&O: How long after submitting your applications was it before you heard anything from either firm? May need to go MIA for a couple days next week. -
Re: Training Contracts 2014It depends if you're a law or non-law student. I think on A&O's website it says if you're a law student you'll hear back mid August, double check though!(Original post by Med2Ky)

Re: Training Contracts 2014Sorry to hear! How long did it take A&O to get back to you?(Original post by Med2Ky)
PFO from A&O. Frustrating. -
Re: Training Contracts 2014Sent the A&) app last Thursday (21st), heard back from them today (Tuesday- 26th). Very disappointed- I had some good feedback on my app/qualifciations before I sent it, so really confused as to what they saw as the sticking point with it. Oh well.(Original post by VacS)

Re: Training Contracts 2014A & O definitely frustrate me - I also had good feedback last year (with a vac scheme in tow) before sending mine and got a PFO - and considering they boast about having trainees from all over the country I fail to see how my 2:1 from a Russell Group isn't enough - it's hard to tell what they're looking for(Original post by Med2Ky)

That said I haven't sent mine for this year so we'll see - I'm revamping the whole thing, have a 68 final degree mark and two more vac schemes to add - hopefully that should be enough to get an interview!Last edited by Rosey2; 26-06-2012 at 18:51. -

Do you by any chance know the contact name for A&O's graduate recruitment? I urgently need to send an email regarding my uni grades. -

Re: Training Contracts 2014Tough break, dude. I wouldn't read too much into an individual PFO. It might just have been weight of numbers.(Original post by Med2Ky)

Re: Training Contracts 2014
Hi everyone,
I know this is so random but was wondering if anybody could help me with a good covering letter. I applied to what seems like a thousand training contracts last year and got nowhere clearly. After recieving a 2.1 in my law degree- countless legal work experiences - internships in China and London - speak English, farsi and Mandarin I fail to see where I am going wrong. If anybody has a strong covering letter that I could have a look at to see where I have gone wrong I would appreciate it. Perhaps I am just not coming across right.
Anways, let me know!

Re: Training Contracts 2014That seems a bit unusual.(Original post by VacS)
If a firm contacts you asking for more information, after they had received your application, is this generally a good thing? -
Re: Training Contracts 2014This does seem a bit strange. I guess if the 500 word question was asking specifically about the firm and why you'd fit in at the firm, then keep the cover letter more general - i.e. why law/commercial law and then experiences/skills you have that would make you a good lawyer (rather than why you'd be a good fit for Macfarlanes).(Original post by midlandsman)
Alright people,
Hope you're having good luck with your applications so far. Wonder if you can help me with something...
I want to apply to Macfarlanes, but the structure of the application form has got me a little stumped.
There's a 500 word section where they want you to outline why you're applying to the firm and why you'd be successful there. However, they also want a cover letter in which 'You need not repeat details you have given in any other part of the form'.
How on earth are you going to write a cover letter without repeating your reasons for applying and talking about why you're a good candidate?
Any ideas on how to best tackle this? -
Re: Training Contracts 2014
I always thought that if there is an application form (rather than a CV), a covering letter was:
Ms. Emma/Nicola Smith

Date
Dear Ms. Smith,
Training Contracts 2014
I would like to be considered for your Training Contracts starting September 2014. My application form is attached herewith in the cvmail/apply4law/word.doc format.

Re: Training Contracts 2014
