Has anyone applied/going to apply for Bircham or the Government Legal Service?

I'm still waiting to hear from Freshfields even though I submitted my application nearly four weeks ago. Has anyone else waited this long to hear from them?

I didn't apply personally, but I have friends who did, and Freshfields does generally get back to applicants within a few weeks.

I wouldn't read too much into it, though; as others have said, the Olympics are altering application timelines for many firms and a lot of people in London will be working from home or taking time off. If you don't hear back by the end of July, I would send their graduate recruitment office a friendly follow-up email or give them a quick ring -- their graduate recruiters are very helpful and personable.

And as always, good luck!

Don't want to dampen your spirits, but does the firm specialise in a certain area? If so, that may further reduce your chances.

If however, they do not and are just a general commercial practice, you probably have a greater chance too.

This is just my opinion. Someone who is more experienced in trainee recruitment may be able to offer a different view.

No worries, thank you for being honest

It's a City firm that does have a general commercial practice, though it is known for its charity department. They tend to provide lower salaries compared with many other City firms as well, so I'm hoping that might be a sticking point for some. I'll just have to wait and see... sigh.

Very best of luck to you! Well done for getting so far already.
Need help! say if I have a work placement booked for next week and Im about to apply for a training contract within the next few days, can I somehow incorporate the work placement into my CV? if so, in what way could I do this i.e. do I just say 'I have a work placement next week which I hope to gain practical experience in law etc etc.?'

Cheers!

Personally, I would add it to the 'Additional information' part of the application. If there isn't one, put it into the work placement area and just be quite clear that it is yet to be undertaken. I would try to find a reasonable way of getting it in there, especially if you've had to work hard to get the VS through formal channels. Seeing a competitor or similar firm's name on an application can be eye catching for recruiters.

Well its not really a proper VS. Would it be OK to put a one liner under "awards and achievements"?

this is what i currently have:

Work Placement: I have a confirmed future work placement at XXXXXX in London.

Seems fairly clear to me. I'd prefer the additional information box to the awards and achievements but that's just me, I don't think there is anything majorly wrong with putting it in there.

Looks like hardly anything yet for the law students PFOs or otherwise. Virtually nothing here, and trollonfriday is quiet too. TS has nothing. I wonder if there will be an explosion in the next day or so.

We'll probably be able to hear the collective groan when the PFO explosion does come.

Going to be my final application hopefully. It is a ball ache though, don't you think? :frown:

Looking at it, it's actually not too bad. I'm hoping to get it done by the end of the day and I've already done similar questions for other application forms but I don't think I have enough for the question about why you are applying to Squire Sanders.

It doesn't help that their website only gives you the bare minimum.

I remember seeing a list of cover letter and CV only firms on this forum or perhaps the old 2013 forum.. does anyone have a link to it/know the firms?

I would also like to know this. Haven't managed to get nearly enough applications done this time round...

Slaughter and May request a covering letter and CV. But I wouldn't underestimate the importance of a good covering letter. I find tailoring my letter to that specific firm just as challenging as filling out a lengthy application form. While it might be tempting to create a one-size-fits-all covering letter, you risk appearing lazy and uninterested in the firm you're applying to.
If you've done work experience at a high street firm, do you just put the name of the firm and your responsibilities on your CV or do you also state the size of the firm i.e. xxx is a small high street firm?

That Reed Smith form has got loads to it, hasn't it?

I found that at interview w/ Reed Smith (at least in 2010), questions were taken somewhat verbatim from the app form. So most of the interview discussion was repeating what you had put down on the app. Was interesting.

Just put down the name of the firm, no need for the description of its size
