Graduated with a First Class Honours Degree - need a good job!!
    Hi all,

I'm Ali, i've just graduated from Manchester Uni with a 1st in Biomedical Science. I've been away for 2 months and not properly started looking for jobs which I admit is a bit silly of me ! Where is the best place to look online for a job? Is there anywhere that you can recommended for jobs with a 1st class degree?

    Thanks

    Ali

Congrats! But don't get so caught up on the fact that you've got a 1st; it's great to aim high but with so many others getting good grades also, you might have to settle for a bit less until the perfect job for you comes up. Good luck

Oh god, well done on your first class degree lol, really happy for you and all that but please, take the chip of your shoulder. Welcome to the real world You need to show any potential employer a lot more than your first class degree in biomedical science, the sooner you realise this the better. Having a first class degree does not make you a first class graduate. As you seem sooo enthused with your academic attainment, why not do a Phd ... academics will care about your first class degree a lot more than employers.

Edit: Oh, I see what this thread is! What a poor attempt. This thread needs deleting, don't give these trolls any publicity.

I have a first too and I totally agree with this comment. Having a first class degree does not make you a first class graduate.

    Epic fail.
Hi, what do you mean with that? I was away travelling - why is that a fail?

there is a website out there that specializes in recruiting 1st class graduates. Can't remember the name now, I haven't used it myself so can't speak for how helpful it is, just thought I'd throw it out there.

You got a first? Congrats! Did you work very hard for it?
If you've got a first that should probably give u a head start in the job market. You may even get headhunted, especially as your degree is in the sciences.

Some posters are a bit cynical about your motives for starting this thread and, tbh, it's hard not to come to any other conclusion. You might be genuine of course but I can't believe someone apparently intelligent enough to get a 1st has given NO thought to this issue before or during your studies?

No thought to what issue? I went to uni and got a 1st. Wasn't expecting it. Didn't really care about my grade, far from it. Went travelling and came back then started to try and find a job. That's it. Always cynics out there aren't there. Really i should have said "i failed uni - please help" and these lot would be my best friends.

Was just after honest help as have never applied for a proper job. Having a 1st seems to put people at distance from this limited experience. Lesson learnt.

    ROFL

As someone else mentioned, experience is much more valuable than a first class degree.

You didn't even look at jobs or postgrad opportunities whilst studying? Didn't try to arrange some work experience?

Choosing a specific degree as part of long term career planning and how you might secure (relevant) employment post graduation. "Oh ****, I've got a degree. What am I gonna do now?" From what you've said it looks like you drifted into it, applied yourself through it, and drifted out again. As I and others have said it's not unreasonable to think you might have given some thought to what you would do after it.

Glad my hard earned taxes were well spent on supporting a half-hearted course of HE

I've explained why I'm personally cynical

I'm not sure people are necessarily that bothered or jealous or resentful of someone getting a 1st. Fair play and congrats to those that do imo. However, I think there might be some issues with people who come along and tell everyone what quals they have achieved in a way that hints of "Look at me everyone. Aren't I clever". And you have to agree that your question is very very quickly followed by an answer in someone's very first post. Pure coincidence? That's what is making many others suspect it's a plant.

I fully accept that might not have been your motives but if there is a lesson to learn it's that there are some real eejits on here and it's getting harder and harder to tell the genuine ones

Yes of course but my mind was always set on travelling around europe after graduating. Never left the country before that. Just decided to do that before looking for a job. Not interested in PGRD courses tbh as fed up with uni work. I agree about the experience - which is why I came on this site. Instead get a load of abuse. Ridiculous. I helped run my mums corner shop before she died which ive done since i was 13 and that's the only work ive known but it was like running a mini business really even though in the family.

As someone else said, experience is worth more than the degree. Not that the degree is useless but... I'm a Biomed graduate and failing miserably at interviews because someone else has done the job before me. I've heard that at 5 interviews now Do you have a placement done?

No, no placement, just the degree. I'm getting a fair few calls from agents etc. Haring the best industry to be in at the moment is the nuclear industry. Prob hard for us biomeds though.

There's not much that you can apart from applying for anything really and to show as much passion as you can for the job.

You could also try looking at agencies who specialise in the field that you wish to go to and maybe firing off a few calls for help and advice on how to break into the field as a recent graduate.

Please accept my apologies for my previous posts as I think I might have gotten the wrong end of the stick.
