    medicine and dentistry work experience
hi i just wanted to ask where the best place to get medical and dental work experience is.

obviously the dental surgery for dentistry, but most of the time is spent outside in the reception as alot of patients didnt want a student peering into their mouth. so what is the best way to gain some real experience in this field

also for medicine, working at the GPs would put me in the same situation due to doctor-patient confidentiality, so how can i get some hands on medical work experience too

    thanks

    Hi there,

I'm applying for Medicine this year and managed to get 3 weeks work experience in contrasting departments in a couple of local hospitals. While it wasn't exactly 'hands on' I think you'll be hard pushed to find any 'hands on' work experience apart from say a care home or something similar. I had the same problem with GP's.

I managed to get mine by looking on the hospital's website, and following the links to hospital departments. Then under each hospital department should be a list of the main consultants in that specialty. I then picked out the departments that I was interested in (eg. Cardiology, ENT, orthopaedics, plastic surgery ect....) and sent a letter to around 3-4 of the consultants from each department. I used the same draft each time and just changed the consultants name. In the end I had 5 offers.

Just to say, not all hospitals will let you shadow in theatre. But its worth asking because it is a truly amazing experience I highly recommend it if your interested in surgery!

If your stuck on how to approach the consultants, I can always send you the letter I sent out if you need it.

Hope this helps a little and good luck!

omgosh, you are a STARRR! please could i have a look at the letter.

i just contacted the departments by email and they all said to go by the official procedure and fill in application form for volunteer work.

how long after you sent the letters out it before you actually began the work shadowing, or even got a reply.

im running out of time...deadline is creeping up!

I managed to get a week shadowing a GP, I had to sign a confidentiality form, the same one everyone else that works in a GPs office regularly does. Aside from that though, there were no issues. Have you tried writing to local GPs/ringing them?

i wrote a letter to the GPs (thanks to you)
they told me that they only take on the F1 students from the university hospital, but after they leave this october, they can give me some time aswel.

i think you just need to ask them to consider you once the other medical students have left
