AQA History - AS

I started school a bit more than a week ago, and my exam board is AQA
- Stalin 1924-41 and Britain 1483-1529

I have the Nelson Thornes book endorsed by AQA. I was wondering whether you have to learn the text book inside out in order to get an A for the exam, or if you have to do extra work around the subject ie) reading other books, using revision guide books and just in general, trying to understand the topic and etc. I did the latter for my GCSE history exam and completely screwed it up. and my friends who had memorized the book inside out for GCSEs got A*s. :frown:

Please let me know.
