Hello my hair is natural afro hair, but it doesn't seem to grow well at all. It's always been short and I want a big afro. I've started getting into a regime:
Moiturising my scalp with Organic root stimulator cream
Using moisturiser
Not using grease
Washing my hair once or twice a week
Putting conditioner in my hair, leaving it in for a few hours and then washing it.
Drinking more water.

I am thinking of taking Biotin to help me grow my hair, would you recommend this? Also what would you advise for my hair to help it grow and grow healthily healthily and to be able to maintain a simple regime in order to take care of my hair? I don't want to undergo and complicated regime.

Thanks

you say you're natural, did you cut all your hair off and start from scratch? And as for hair growing, hair can only grow at a maximum of 0.5 inches a month, regardless of who you are. However a bad diet/unhealthy lifestyle may cause it to decrease. I can't say for certain what could help improve the rate if it was below, but I know eating a lot of protein helps, seeing as that's what hair is made from...

Hi!

My boyfriend has afro hair and he gets a really itchy scalp from where the hair grows through really thick and curly. In some parts it all most looks ingrown as some of teh hair follicles look a bit inflamed, I was wodnering whether this is common with afro hair and if you had any tips? He's been to the doctors and had a dry scalp shampoo prescribed but it hasn't worked and his itching drives me crazy!

Thanks!

No I didn't cut my hair, I've always had afro hair. The thing is, it's always been short and at the same length, it doesn't seem to grow much.

My diet is okay, I eat all sorts of things.

Maybe he needs to put oil on his scalp? Also what is the name of the shampoo he has been prescribed?
I got my hair relaxed about two years ago then decided to go back to natural. I was going to cut it all off but my mum begged me not so I have been going it out and haven't put relaxer in it for 8 months. I currently had braids in extensions to protect the hair from the cold when winter comes and to hide the two textures. The hair gets really itchy but I have been told not to put to many products in my hair so what should I do? How often should I spray or put pomade in it?
I also have problems with growing my hair long. I think my actual hair growth is average and normal when I look at my new growth, but the overall length isn't really getting much longer so it must be a problem with retention :frown:. And I don't even know what esle to do cos I feel like I've tried pretty much everything these past 3 years, from going natural to protective styling in buns, braids, weave, etc, and using better products recommended on LHCF and deep conditioning nearly every week. I feel like giving up expecting it to ever happen cos the disappointments just hurt

:hugs: Nice I'm not the only one. I did used to just assume it was a black women's thing, since I've never really known any black females in my life who have had naturally long hair, unless they were mixed. And then I one day came across a website called Growafrohairlong, where this black woman had grown her hair to waist length and was giving all these tips and advice that I decided to follow. I also found the forum LHCF as well as hair blogs and YouTube videos and I was just soaking up and practising every tip I could. I thought I'd be armpit length by December 2008, then that didn't happen so I thought December 2009, then that didn't happen, so I thought December 2010, and guess what? That didn't happen either!

But I don't know, I'm still struggling to get to armpit length, though what I'd really prefer at least bra strap length (but that's even more far off!) and it's so darn frustrating! I've even cried about sometimes (haha a bit pathetic I know but it's one of many things I'm failing at in life ). Though, I like to tell myself that at the end of the day it's only hair, and I could have much worse things happening to me than hair that won't grow long, so meh. Will just continue to keep mainly wearing braid extensions or weaves and that'll keep me satisfied for now.

Sorry for the rant :o:

Omg same here :five: A lot of black women think that their hair can't grow unless they are mixed but that's not true, it just needs more care. I really want my hair long and it saddens me. I can't just sit here and believe that I can't achieve the length I want so I'm not going to give up at all. I don't want to just rely on braids all the time. I want long hair. I also came across those websites and tips online, even on TSR, but some regimes were way too complicated and some were simple, so I tried whatever I could but my hair just doesn't seem to grow.

Also I am thinking of taking pills like biotin to help. I don't expect anything like hair growth overnight, but I just want long and healthy hair.

Hmm, cool, but you've got to think whether your problem is actually growing hair, or just retaining the length. Because if your hair if growing at a normal rate but just not retaining length because of breakage or whatever (which is the problem I think I have), then pills to make the hair grow faster probably aren't gonna do a whole lot to solve the overall problem. Unless they're pills that actually strengthen hair and stop it breaking, then I could really use some of that.

Well I hope you do come up with something to achieve your hair goals eventually.

I think this might be my problem, but the kind of pills I want are the ones that will strengthen my hair and stop the breakage. Someone on TSR suggested taking biotin and I've heard biotin is good for the hair so I am considering purchasing it. I'm also having a bit of a problem with my nails also so maybe it would help.

I don't know how helpful this will be to you guys, as I am mixed but still do have very course, tightly curled afro hair - but the time when my hair grew most was when I wasn't doing anything to it other than washing it with conditioner once/twice a week and using leave-in conditioner in the morning. I only ever combed it through with my fingers in the shower when it had conditioner in it, and pretty much left it alone other than that.

I recently had it cut so I could wear it out in an afro, and now i'm in the habit of twirling it into knots and picking it out, so it will probably end up short again haha. But yeah, I rarely see people with afro hair as long as mine even since it was cut so I must have been doing something right.

I've been doing that. After all I don't want an overly complicated regime.

What leave in conditioner would you recommened? I use moiturizer.

I haven't found one that i'm totally happy with yet. Using Aphogee leave-in at the moment.
