Re: Official Warwick Economics Q&A Thread
Hi,
Are you willing to make offers (the typical offer of A*AAa, obviously) to candidates such as myself who have all As at AS in Maths Physics Economics and Biology (and an A in GS and a B in critical thinking) who are predicted only AAA? Have you ever done this in the time Warwick has started asking for an A*? I am asking because predicted grades are just that - predicted, and often subjective - and I feel it unjust to discount one applicant over another similar applicant because of predictions, even if they achieved the same at AS.
EDIT: this is for L100 by the way, just realised I didn't make that clear at all.Last edited by FDR; 03-10-2011 at 19:16. -

hi, roughly how long would an admissions tutor take to decide whether to make a person an offer after they have seen their application? thanks
it depends on how complex the application is. For straightforward cases, it shouldn't take long at all for an admissions tutor, but they may request other information, seek the opinion of another admissions tutor, or wait till there is a range of similar applications to compare if they are not sure.
However, once the admissions tutor has made their decision, there is a range of checks which need to be undergone before we can process the decision and release it to you.
All in all, the process shouldn't take very long, but, as I say, there are a wide range of things which can slow it down a little. -

yes, we have made offers to people who are predicted AAAa, but the offer you will receive is for A*AAa.
Whilst predicted grades are indeed subjective, so is everything else which appears on the UCAS form, aside from your grades at GCSE and AS Level, so we rely on them being a fair representation of your academic ability, in the same way we rely on your personal statement being a fair representation of you as an applicant. In that respect, they, along with the rest of the school's report, are an important part of the application which we would not want to discount. -

How do Warwick look at Short course GCSE's? Do you count them as half or not count them at all?
they will form part of your application profile, and so we would like to see good results in the short courses you have taken, but the main focus of our attention will be on the results in your full GCSE's. -

Hi,
I got an A at Maths GCSE, will this disadvantage me?
However, I got an A at AS level Maths and I am predicted an A* for A2
Thanks!
yes, it will disadvantage you in the sense that Maths is the subject we are most interested in, and hence we like to see the strongest results in that subject where possible, and a majority of our applicants will have achieved A* at GCSE maths.
However, as you mention, we are also interested in your post-GCSE performance, so explaining that your mathematical ability is increasing, as evidenced by your AS level and predicted A2 level results, will counter that effect somewhat.
As such, an A at GCSE maths is not a complete barrier to getting an offer (for if it were, we would explicitly require an A*), but it will put you at a relative disadvantage to many other applicants. -
Re: Official Warwick Economics Q&A Thread
I'm sure this has been asked but does warwick consider a BTEC distinction the equivalent to an GCSE A*, as its a little unfair on some state schools who force their students to do BTECs but tell us little about their worth only that they boast the schools league table position.
Will warwick consider the schools GCSE and AS-level average performance?
Thanks -

Hi

Firstly this is such a great idea , wish all uni's did this!
Sorry if this has already been answered, but ive been predicted A A A a and really want to study economics, politics and international relations. The a levels are all good subjects and i got 4a*s and 7a's at gcse.
Obviously i havnt been predicted the minimum entry requirements, however i think i can acheive them. If i applyed would i be rejected outright and is there any point of me applying? even if my ps and references are really good, do I stand any chance at all?
Thank you

Hi,
I'm interested in taking the L100 Economics BSc at Warwick. I'm doing Maths, Economics and Biology at A2 and also the Welsh Baccalaureate. Am I right in my understanding that the offer would be A*AA plus Welsh Bac?
Thanks!(Original post by Alpha5)

Hi,
unfortunately, I'm not the expert on non-typical qualifications, so I've emailed our central admissions team to get a definitive answer for both of you. I'll post it when I receive it! -

no, your predictions would not lead to you being rejected outright. The predicted grades are just one aspect of the school's reference we look at, so we would consider all other information in your application as well before making a decision. -
Re: Official Warwick Economics Q&A Thread
Hi,
Clearly GCSEs have a significant weighting in the decisions process (which is fair enough), however, do individual GCSEs have more weight than others? for example if an applicant with straight A/A*s with one D or E in a subject other than Maths, Sciences or English (e.g in a foreign language, or Art/Tech or Drama) applied, would that one result be held against them, or would it be regarded as anomalous considering the other GCSEs achieved by that candidate?Last edited by FDR; 06-10-2011 at 17:33. -

What were the no of applications, offers made and total acceptances for last year's cycle
(Original post by University of Warwick)
Hi,
1. For 2011 entry (i.e. the cycle just gone) we had around 3100 applicants for courses hosted by Economics, and made about 1200 offers. -

we consider all results as indicative of academic performance. We would be concerned when certain results "stand out" on an application (as you describe), but it depends on what subject it was as to how concerned I would be.
For example, we don't make offers based on AS/A2 General studies, but I do take into account results and predictions for this subject when given, as I expect students to be able to consistently perform well in a wide range of subjects.
