Re: Which Martial Arts to take up?
Iv'e tried Nearly all martial arts. Each for two years alone. I personally prefered Kung-Fu simply because i had a good instructor/teacher. Taek Won Do is very simular and is my second on the list. Boxing is a sport not a martial art although i thoroughly enjoyed it. Karate is my least favourite.
Happy to Help :P -

Re: Which Martial Arts to take up?HAH! No, just no. BJJ, Judo, Sambo, submission/catch/freestyle/Greco-Roman wrestling, Muay Thai, Boxing, kickboxing, Kyokushin - if it isn't any of the aforementioned then do not waste your time and money.(Original post by Average_Aaron)
So far, Tae Kwon Do is at the top of my list.
Krav is a big pile of lame too - no sparring so you can never properly commit any of it to muscle memory or know whether it would actually work under pressure. The "yeah but it's too deadly to spar with" is a ****ty argument - if you don't spar then you're no better than Exploding Palm Kung Fu, Wing Chun, Tai Chi or any of that other bull****.Last edited by Einheri; 30-09-2011 at 17:39. -
Re: Which Martial Arts to take up?How come no to TKD brah?

And why do you say no to TKD? Im genuinely curious.
Sounds like a good idea. Thanks(Original post by Arcanine)
Try all recommended, take your pick.
Thats one of the reasons actually. Self defense. But I'm a show off too so TKD seemed up my alley...(Original post by Ban)

I just started Muay Thai, and I'm liking it so far. I'll see how it is once I actually do competitions.
Got to protect the girlfriend from Villains somehow!

Re: Which Martial Arts to take up?It's around. 100 years ago Kano Jigoro, the founder of Judo, challenged the traditional Jujutsu schools of Tokyo to a contest with his Judoka. The difference between Judo and Jujutsu is that Judo practices hard sparring and drilling against fully resisting opponents whereas Jujustu trains primarily through kata, point sparring and drilling against non-resistant, compliant opponents - Kano's Judoka obliterated the Jujutsuka and this is why today Judo and not Jujutsu is Japan's most celebrated and widely practiced martial art. It has been long established that this kind of training is vastly superior to the traditional style of kata forms, point sparring and non-resistant drilling. Similarly Brazilian Jiu-jitsu has been thoroughly tested and proven in Vale Tudo, (no holds barred fights; the precursor to modern MMA), streetfighting in Rio de Janeiro, and is the dominant form of training in modern MMA - it employs the same philosophy as Kano Jigoro; training with "aliveness". The same is true of wrestling, but outside of Eastern Europe, The USA and Brazil there are very few decent coaches. Krav Maga still follows the inferior training methodology that was disproven several generations of martial artists ago, as does Tae Kwon Do.(Original post by Average_Aaron)

TKD is more of a performance art than anything. TKD works only against other TKD practitioners under TKD rules. It is 90% useless but acrobatic kicks - in a fight kicking above the knee will mostly get you caught and dumped on your head; unless you're CroCop kicks to the head are a ridiculous liabilty. It has been tried against other martial arts and has always failed tremendously. If you want to do striking Muay Thai is the ideal, followed by Western Boxing, following by some forms of kickboxing. Kyokushin Karate is also very good (excepting the strange ban on head strikes with the hands) but is rare in the UK and your average karate dojo outside of Okinawa is a worthless McDojo. Please, take our word for it and forget TKD.Last edited by Einheri; 30-09-2011 at 14:36. -
Re: Which Martial Arts to take up?
What Einheri is trying to say is that the Krav Maga philosophy is out of date and was effectively made extinct by Judo.
This is not to say that you won't find people that aren't quite tough within those styles - but for the average student of this kind of stuff, it's not good.
Basically, the training methodology has been proven to be flawed. -
Re: Which Martial Arts to take up?Yes, this was what I was trying to say. I perhaps wasn't too clear in my comparing Jujutsu training methodology to that of Krav Maga. I've edited the post to make it clearer.(Original post by Clip)

TKD is absolutely awful for practical self defence. Try throwing a spinning high kick against someone on the street and see where it gets you.
Krav exists in the UK, but it is scarce. -

Don't know where you're getting this no sparring thing from, in our school we glove up with headguards and go all out.
BJJ is useless for practical self defence. It's amazing in the ring or cage, because you only ever face one person but for practical self defence it's useless. The last place you want to be in a confrontational situation is on the ground. I don't care if you've got your assailant in a triangle choke and are putting him out, his mate (or 5) could be round the corner and kick you in the face.
The same goes for any grappling based martial art. Traditional Ju Jitsu is good for self defence in this respect because the majority of the techniques taught are standing up techniques for getting out of chokes, holds etc.
Muay Thai, Boxing, Kickboxing and Kyokushin are all well and good for sport, but there are huge gaps in each system in order for them to be effective on the street.
I stand by what I said, Krav Maga is my number 1 and always will be. A close second would be a GOOD karate school if you can find one, and not one of these McDojos.
