My experience studying in Maastricht University
Discussion for those studying or looking to study in the Netherlands.

Re: My experience studying in Maastricht UniversityFirst of all you will learn a bit of various civil law systems (France, Germany, the Netherlands) and also Common law systems (UK, and a bit of the US).. So you have a solid base when it comes to deal with cases where parties from multiple countries are involved. Afterwards you'll learn a great deal in European law (European company law, European competition law, Foundations of European law, European administrative law, etc!) so you will basically be an expert in the field of European law. You will also get some International law courses...(Original post by Will3)
Hi there, fantastic information.
I too want to study the Law programme, just wondering what the career prospects are like? Do you plan to continue to practice law in the future? How will this degree differ from one of an English law degree.
thanks
With a European law degree you can decide to sit the bar exam in a certain country (in some you will have to do a conversion course, usually one year max. I have a friend doing it for English law) and then you practically are a lawyer with a great expertise in the field of European law.. which means higher wages as you will certainly deal with mergers & acquisitions, competion law issues, etc...
EDIT: In my own case once I'll have finished my Bachelor of European law I'd like to do a Master of European law either in Maastricht or in one other university...Last edited by Duncan8; 05-12-2011 at 15:14. -
Re: My experience studying in Maastricht University(Original post by Will3)
okay great, thanks. That helps a lot!
Apologies, one more thing;
what did you do about accomodation when you applied? Is it the same as England, where Maastricht allocated you a place, or it is entirely independent?
thanks in advance
No, it's quite different. Maastricht University does have some accommodation (in the city centre and quite far from the faculty and you can apply whenever you want and you'll probably get a place) but I would advise you to look for private accommodation (for example through Kamerburo.nl or even better, through some facebook groupes like: Rooms/kamer in maastricht etc) so you know with who you are before. I have some friends living in the uni accommodation and there are a lot of people sharing the same things.. I don't really like that personnally -
Re: My experience studying in Maastricht University
Well, wow, this thread has been a great help to me. At the moment I'm really not impressed by our university system in this country and for a while I've been considering going overseas. After a few google searches, I came across Maastricht and their Arts and Culture/Liberal Arts and Sciences courses, which I was amazed were taught in English.
I have a few questions that are bothering me too though.
1) How about funding? We have Student Finance in the UK, but is there a Dutch equivalent which EU students can apply to? I don't have a lot of savings and my parents don't have money to help me out either. I'm on a gap year at the moment so I have time to work and try to save money if I have to.
2) Is not speaking Dutch REALLY not a problem? Obviously if I went there I'd make an attempt to learn the language and not be completely ignorant, but I'm just wondering.
3) Making friends. Do a lot of the Dutch students speak English, or is there quite a few UK students there already? It'd be horrible to be in a foreign city and feel totally isolated.
4) I find the website a little hard to navigate sometimes, but are the university facilities good? What about locally, libraries and places to study?
Thanks to anyone who can answer these questions for me. Maastricht really does seem too good an opportunity to ignore. -

Hi!
1) For the funding, I'm a afraid but I barely know anything about it. I know that if you're working 8 hours a week, during three months you can apply for 280€/month. Then you have to continue working 8 hours a week (yes a week!), couple of my friends have it!
2) Dutch is really not a problem. Like you, I wanted to learn Dutch but really everyone speaks English.. Now I have a Dutch girlfriend so I am trying a bit
3) All Dutch students speak English fluently, when you're in town or in the facilities, you hear English all the time, don't worry.. This year particularly I saw a big increase of UK Students (check the Info-Uk maastricht Facebook page if you want to learn more), and I have a feeling it is going to be even higher next year. No, you won't definitely feel isolated..!
4) There are really really great places to study. There are two libraries, one in the centre and one on the Medicine/Psychology campus. Seriously, the library in the centre rocks. It can host more than a thousand students, it's very modern, open until midnight during exam periods and 22 o'clock during the normal days. You have also a coffee corner there where everyday you have a different coffee "special" which is really of good quality, you also have plenty of sandwich to buy, muffins, cookies, tuna or salmon wraps, soups, and plenty of other food!
There is also a Student Service Centre where you can ask for any problems you have, there is Selexyz which is one of the most beautiful book shop I have ever seen (you can study at the back : picture here: http://www.cafeduweb.com/images/uplo...z_1_270111.jpg ) you also have in each faculty some study places also with a coffee corner, printing machines, etc. The lectures rooms are usually spread around the city and some are in the faculties..

Does Netherlands have post study visa for international students?

Re: My experience studying in Maastricht University
As someone who is interested in politics and European integration, I am seriously considering applying for European Studies at Maastricht, and will be attending the opening day on the 21st January. I received a BBD at A-Level, do people think this will be OK?
-
Re: My experience studying in Maastricht UniversityAs said beforehand, Maastricht University doesn't really look at your grades when considering your application. Maastricht University gives a chance to everyone who has a high school degree and the difficulty comes later, not during the application process... Be prepared to work hard because the programme will be competitive! But I did it, yes, I am now into the second-year!(Original post by inhale/exhale)

Re: My experience studying in Maastricht University
I know you aren't doing the Economics and Business Economics course, but would you have any info about employment?
- Do most students get recruited on-campus?
- Are there any big firms who like Maastricht graduates?
- I've heard Maastricht graduates are recruited by alot og German firms, is this correct?
Thanks alot -
Re: My experience studying in Maastricht UniversityHere is a really good and (one of the most awesome) promotion video I've ever seen for the Maastricht Econometrics programme in the Business faculty: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BerpIiIQ5Q8(Original post by soldiersixteen)

- Yes, there are a lot of career fairs or some companies organise workshops there, Abercrombie & Fitch organised a workshop, Google did too.. No later than 2 months ago. There was also like a month a go the MakeAMove Career Fair, was awesome.. All the big companies were there.. My friend who's only a second-year business student passed the first steps to be hired in JP Morgan.. There were all the "Big Four" companies: Deloitte, PwC, Ernst & Young, .. and many more!
- Yes! I saw people asking that question on a career video and they mentioned Maastricht, LSE and Solvay Business School (when it comes to find a job in Brussels)
- It's true, many German firms also love recruiting Maastricht graduates! -

Re: My experience studying in Maastricht University
Wow! This thread is awesome. I hope to go to Maastricht University in 2013. Im 16 at the moment and will be visiting the Bachelor Open day this March due to the fact that i have been asked by my tutor to start researching which Universities i wish to apply for. Maastricht has always been my number one choice. I hope to attend the European Law School English Track and i am a little curious about the grade situation. Which grades are needed in terms of English A - Level grades to gain a place in the desired course. I have looked at English Universities and they display the grades which are needed. This is not the case with Dutch Universities. If anyone could help that would be awesome. Many thanks and a Happy New Year to all of you.

As said beforehand.. They don't really look at your grades. But try to keep up with the good work, we never know if they would change the system. Basically, Maastricht lets the chance to many students to enter (as it's very international) but when you're in the course.. It's kinda difficult and a lot of work is demanded.. But I'm sure you'll be able to do it (I did it!).. Motivation is the only key! -
Re: My experience studying in Maastricht University
Thanks for the reply, thats very similar to what i have heard students say when i have done some research on the Internet. One site i remember stated that about three fourths of the original intake drop out after the first year. I am prepared to work hard though similar to yourself so it should be ok.
One more question if you don't mind, what are the prospects like say after receiving a Masters in European and International Tax Law after the initial Bachelor. Are there good prospects for Maastricht students? Have you had any internships yet?
Many thanks for your help.

Re: My experience studying in Maastricht UniversityThere's a number somewhere on the programme that says that a lot of students find jobs quickly after graduation..(Original post by GeorgeN11)
