    Journalism Applicants 2012
    Howdy,

So is anyone else doing Journalism in 2012,

    Where are you applying,
    What subjects/grades did you get,
What work experience are you doing,
What sort of course content are you looking for (TV, Radio, Print etc)
    Whats your DREAM job!

Would really appreciate feedback, its allways about Medican or Computer Science on TSR so I thought it would be good to create our own feed.

Be good if we could swap ideas and experience and challenge others perspectives

I worked at a local magazine for a year and a bit.
Then I did two weeks of work experience at a local newspaper.
I am planning on starting a blog soon and am doing a month internship in the Summer.
What sort of course content are you looking for (TV, Radio, Print etc)
I'm focusing on Print at the moment, but would ideally like a course which encompasses other elements.
    Whats your DREAM job!
Dream job would be ending up somewhere like The Culture Show or Radio 1. I'd love to have some job in culture features or reviewing. I'm also considering going into advertising at some stage.

Yeah that's about it. So far had a test day at Trent, turned down an interview at Kent and am waiting for my activity day at Bournemouth. Scary stuff!

    Re: Journalism Applicants 2012
Yep it was AQA! They're such harsh markers but to be honest, I was expecting either a B or C anyway, but I genuinely thought I done well in the exam! My whole school had bad luck with English Lit this year, there were only about 3 people with A's 12 with B's 11 with C's and there were loads of E's and U's. The department was quite shocked as well, because those who were consistently achieving A's/B's and C's throughout the year ended up with D's and even with all our papers being sent for a remark, it only went up by 2 UMS only. It was such as shame and a waste of effort and time. Thank god I only need 3 A-levels for Uni, I would've hated to continue with English - In hindsight, I should've picked another subject, but yeah, I guess we got some evaluative skills for Journalism!! Sorry for the long reply, I'm feeling rather bored today and feel like just talking for ages! Have you thought of which university you'd like to go to yet? I'm super torn between Sheffield and City university, London.

Ooh same I'm torn. Plus I can't decide if the reputation of Sheffield as a top uni is something crucial to consider

I applied to Bournemouth, UCLAN and Kent too.
Got offers from Bournemouth and UCLAN and an interview at Kent, but turned the interview down. How about you?

    Hi! I'm Pia

    I've applied for Journalism at:
    Westminster,
    Brunel,
    East London and
    Uni of Arts.

    A Levels
    English Language A
    Media A*
    Music Technology C

    Work experience:
Editor of College/School magazine/online magazine and producer of our college radio shows.

    Course content:
    Journalism or Broadcast Journalism.

    Dream Job:
Editor of Woman's glossy magazines (of course, years down the line that one is! haha!), to write for magazines or TV presenter specialising in celeb media.

So, yeah... That's me I've had offers from Brunel & Canterbury CC (to do a Media and American studies course, though) and given an interview at Westminster for later this month.

Anyone heard back yet from their chosen uni's?

If you want to work in magazines don't go to Westminster. They had their accreditation from the Periodicals Training Council (PTC) removed for failing to meet standards. Their postgraduate course in journalism OK (BJTC validated) but their journalism BA is just their owld media studies course relabelled as journalism. If you are going to get decent A-levels then it would be a shame to waste them on going to Westminster. Also, by the way, the Journalism course is based at the Harrow campus which is a long way out from London. If you are conisdering that, you should look at other places more around the London region such as Kent or Farnham. There's a lot of choice and you don't have to settle for Westminster. UEL is not much good, but for journalism now I think it would be the equal or maybe better than Westminster. good luck any wya and let us know about the interview. Ask about the Periodicals Training Council and post what they say

    (1) Where applying
Winchester - Journalism (Print and Broadcast) (BJTC, NCTJ)
Kent - Journalism Studies (NCTJ Accredited)
City - Journalism and Social Science (Four Years)
    UCLAN - Journalism (BJTC)
    Cardiff - Journalism Studies

    (2) subjects/grades
    Philosophy - predicted minimum B
    Politics - predicted minimum B
    English Lit - predicted B
    Politics AS - A
    English Literature AS - C
    Classical Civilization AS - B

    (3) What work experience are you doing
I have not had time, but I have a relative who is journalist and see told me about the journalism training world and how to get in. I am no good at exams, so I am working flat out on grades

    (4) What course content
I am not sure at the moment so that is why I would love it if I can get in to Winchester. They are new and you do print journalism, radio, TV and magazine with all equal weight and their gradates have gone in to all those fields. Kent I was advised about because it is also new. City is prestige and UCLAN and Cardiff are also well known.

    (5) DREAM job!
Any job that is not boring, where you get to deal with different subjects every day. That is the main attra
ction to me. I don't want to be stuck in an office!

    HELP!

I have an interview at Winchester in two weeks - there are tests and a screen test. My A-levels are lower than they are asking, but it says they will base it on the interview - so that is super nervous-making. I so want to go there, but would accept the others as a back up. Has anyone had a Winchester offer or interview yet?

I am a first year at Winchester and if the interviews are the same as last year you will have a grammar and writing test, a current affairs test and discussion, a screen test on the autocue and a personal interview.

It seems daunting but I think if they have gone to the trouble of offering an interview then they are likely to offer the place, and they are just checking to see if you will fit in. Last year I was in a group of about 10 and nearly all of them got offers and came.

My main tip is that you look at the Winchester Journalism website and WINOL videos on You Tube - just search Winol on You Tube and Winchester Journalism. And on the day bring a newspaper and be ready to say why you like it! Also if you have a journalist you like as well, be ready to talk about that. That was what I was asked in the personal interview. In the personal interview they also went through my personal statement carefully asking questions about it, which was fine. The tutors are very nice and as I say if you are going for the interviiew then they are probably just checking what you are like.

I have to agree Westminster would be a terrible mistake for Journalism.
Yeah I'd second that, I think it's misleading they call it Westminster when it the campus is miles away from its name, not to mention the political connotations you'd expect from the uni, of which it seems to offer none.

I've just sent off my UCAS - applied for Leeds Met, Leeds Uni, Salford, City and University of the Arts London. I am slightly apprehensive as I'm going through as a mature student completing an Access to Humanities, but have been writing for the Metro and Yorkshire Post on a weekly basis since May, so I guess I'll find out soon!

Oh is it? I loved the Uni when I visited, however, Brunel is NCTJ accredited! Which makes me sway towards them! What's the cons about Westminster?

You're not the first to say this! Haha! Westminster was my first choice! But now I'm definitely rethinking! Brunel is/was my second. I'm definitely going to take my time and have a think now because when I visited and others I've spoken to have said how great the university is, yet, as of late, I've heard some negative feed back. Thank you! I'll be sure to let you know!
