Wondered how long it would take for DaveSmith99 to comment on Liverpool matters....

Re: Worst Manager your team ever hadSecond place before it collapsed and they came 7th... Could have bounced back but he was sacked and all the decent players left. As well as winning a CL, getting to a final and being seconds away from a third final, where we would have beaten United. (Just one of those things, you beat us to the league so I could see us winning that!)

Re: Worst Manager your team ever hadFunny how he is for two huge clubs.(Original post by Stu Laverty)
Graeme ****ing Souness. -
Re: Worst Manager your team ever had
There's only been two managers of my team during my lifetime, and the first of those left when I was only about 19 months old so I suppose, in my lifetime, it has to be Ron Atkinson (though he did win two FA Cups). Still, if he hadn't left in 86-87 who knows what would have happened...
He was awful and certainly up there but worse than Dalgish?(Original post by Stu Laverty)
Graeme ****ing Souness.
Granted, Daglish did make a couple of good signings (Given, being one) and got to an FA Cup final but Newcastle could have achieved so much better. He took them from title contenders to mid-table (I know that Souness helped to wreck Robson's team).
Don't know if Middlesbrough or FC Twente fans would agree.(Original post by Seb)
Whichever team has Steve McClaren (nottingham forest I think?). God, he is just such a bellend!! -
Re: Worst Manager your team ever hadHe was a bit before my time as a full fledged fan, but the consensus I get from my mates is that they appreciate what he did for boro, but didn't like his style.(Original post by River85)

Personally I have no quarrel with him. And the unmitigated disaster that was strachan has long since drove any negative thoughts of mclaren from our minds

Re: Worst Manager your team ever hadDalglish did a horrendous job for us, no doubt. I think the long term effects from Souness was much worse though. Like you said, he took Robson's team which was also a title challenging team just a couple of years before Robson was sacked (which in itself has to go down as one of the dumbest decisions any Premier League club has ever done). Souness' entire reign as Newcastle boss was an exemplification of all the things that Newcastle did wrong from the mid-late 00's: spending over the odds on overrated players that commanded enormous wage budgets. I think Michael Owen is the worst signing in our history: we weren't to know it at the time, but to have one of the largest contracts in the world (at that time) on a player who barely played and lost all motivation to play for us in the later years was an awful decision. Then you had players like Luque and Boumsong who cost far too much.(Original post by River85)

I don't think Souness could have done any worse with that Robson team. Robert, Bellamy and Jenas all looked tremendous at Newcastle and Souness managed to piss them all off (how much of this was Souness' fault though is up for debate).
The damage that Souness did was the start of a long line of occurrences that ultimately led to our relegation. At least everything Dalglish did was recovered by Robson.
To be honest though, we've had some terrible managers over the years. There's a lot of competition for our worst manager ever. -
Re: Worst Manager your team ever hadIn my defence that post was from last October when the full scale of Mcleish's absurdity was to become apparant. He is a late climber but takes his crown at the #1 spot.(Original post by donuticus)
As a Villa van I would have to say that both Dr Josef Venglos and Alex Mcleish were far worse as Villa managers than David O'leary.
He was pretty bobbins though.
