Re: Dental hygiene and dental therapy 2012 entry?UHI is a bit different in the way that there is 3 centres that the course is taught in and there are different amounts of students in each , inverness (8 students), Dumfries (4) and Stornoway (2).(Original post by helpin)
Hi, wow thats really good , what is it like at UHI teaching, environment ect?
yh I didnt think of that , I think they would for definate ask that, thanks!
In my personal statement I talked about the work experience more, so I think they will probably ask about roles ect . I really enjoyed work experience so I think I could propably talk about it, I am just worried about any other questions.
And all of our lectures are taught together by video conferencing. It actually works really well..
I'm a student on Dumfries and there's actually only 3 in my year as someone's retaking 1st.. so during clinical skills time and clinic time you have 1 tutor between 3.. which is pretty good going!
Also all the centres are really new!
But the way it works with UHI is you start seeing your first patients 3months in and you do hygiene work for your first year then therapy work for your second, then do it all in 3rd year!
But if your looking to apply.. I actually didn't apply on ucas for this course as I wanted to use all my ucas applications for as many places as possible (as it was my first time applying) and I found that UHI had their own application form on their website! I don't know if they still have it. but they did used to accept from ucas and direct applications.
Let me know if you have any questions!
Good luck! -

Re: Dental hygiene and dental therapy 2012 entry?I think the response can be anywhere from about a week to a couple of months :/ I heard back like a few days later but another girl on my course was waiting over 2 months, so I guess everyone's different!(Original post by helpin)
Aww thanks, right now I am gonna just focus on exams and then worry about interviews but u know its still at the back of my mind, how long does it usually take to get a reply from the uni after the interview? I also wanted to ask about the manual dexterity, is it better to bring in something as proof , or just talk about it , I wrote about that in my personal statement so shall i bring something in? I also wanted to ask you, umm you know if they ask why did you choose this course.. which sounds like an average normal question .. if you kind of cant explain yourself properly like i know why but i always struggle to explain it properly is this a big negative against you I am scared il mess it up explaining my self and they just waffle nonsense , also I was thinking that maybe after I wanna do dentistry is it worthwhile mentioning that to them ?
Yh i have heard its pretty competitive too , however with the tution fees rising do you think less people will apply here rather than a funded uni ?
wow 12 people sounds quite like a cosy family , is there like a wide diversity within the group of people from differenet backgrounds and cultures ?
Thanks for all your help & good luck with your finals
I took something in for my manual dexterity and got to talk about it, but it sort of depends what it is, obviously I didn't choose to take a musical instrument. I think if its something you could talk about then its good, but perhaps something like art, there might not be that much to say about it? Just what I've sort of picked up... I had made clay beads with a primary school that I helped out in once a week so I talked about leadership etc with it, but I know a boy who had his interview on the same day said he took his sketchbook from GCSE art and they didn't even ask to see it.
With regards to ques, just be honest and try and get across your commitment to the course. When they ask why they're trying to make sure you really want it and that you won't drop out if it gets tough, so maybe that will help you try and come up with a good answer. I obviously can't tell you what to say as I'm not you, but possibly mention skills you have/want to develop, helping people, science etc.
I wouldn't say "i want to do dentistry afterwards" as the course isn't meant to be a stepping stone to dentistry- but if they ask you, don't lie. Perhaps mention you'd be open to further study after this degree, depending on how you get along with the course.
I think fees will make a huge difference as a few people that have done/on the course at Manchester have said if they'd got places on funded courses would have taken it. To me it didn't make a difference but from my experience for the slightly older students, ones with families etc it would matter I think..
Yep we are all different but still get along as a group
Sorry for the essay!!! -
Re: Dental hygiene and dental therapy 2012 entry?
Good Morning everyone! I´m a newbie to TSF. I´m applying to do Oral Health/Dental Therapy too. I´m still thinking about Glasgow Caledonian although they don´t have anything on their website at all. I asked and they are still running this course though. Anyone have anymore info about it? Like syllabus, entrance requirements and so on? The others Uni´s I´m keen to apply to are Edinburgh, Dundee, Cardiff and Portsmouth or Tees.
All the best, Didi. -

Re: Dental hygiene and dental therapy 2012 entry?
Hi Guys
I qualified from the University of Liverpool in 2009 with a Combined Diploma in Dental Hygiene and Therapy and thought I may be able to offer you some advice.
First of all, don't worry how long it takes to hear from the Uni's, some take longer than others and it all depends on funding for places, how many applicants there are etc...
Also, I wouldn't worry too much about doing a diploma or degree. When I applied, Liverpool only did the diploma, it was hard work, and in my experience employers don't care... you can still do the same job, they are more concerned with your experience and knowledge.
I know things have changed since I applied, but my interview was conducted by 3 members of staff at the University, they asked questions relating to things I had written in my personal statement, my experience in the dental field (I previously worked as a dental nurse) and I had a couple of 'what if' questions... one of these was, 'how would you manage a 4 year old child who needed local anaesthesia for an extraction'. My advice would be to be yourself, and be confident. Communication is a massive part of the job so you need to be able to communicate well... the interviewers will allow for nerves to a certain extent.
If you don't get offered a place, don't give up, get a job as a dental nurse and work towards your dental nurse qualification, gaining extra skills afterwards, eg radiography and OHE... this will show your commitment to the profession and willingness to learn.
If you want to do dentistry, do dentistry!! The two professions are completely different and as yet there are no conversion courses for qualified hygiene/therapists... you would still need to do the 5 years and to my knowledge, you would still need to get the A levels required.
Hygienist and therapist jobs are few and far between at the moment and you still have to complete CPD when you graduate... be sure this is the profession you are passionate about... it is more than just a job.
I love my job, and I wouldn't change it for the world...
If you have any questions... don't be afraid to ask.
