Oops left some details out - can't edit original message so here:

As title says really - occasionally when I breathe in, it feels like someone is sticking a pin into my heart or surrounding area on the inhalation, and it takes a few breaths in and out for the sharp pain to go away... when it's hurting, doesn't hurt on shallow breaths but hurts if I breathe too deeply and I have to breathe deeply a couple of times to stop it hurting. Eek. Help. GP visiting time or just a muscle pulled? (Has been happening for a few months but has happened a couple of times recently)
It can just possibly be normal chest pain, I thought it was from the heart as well initially. (Confirmed it wasn't after numerous visits to specialists.) Double check to see if it is on the right hand side or left hand side.

I hope it isn't anything bad because that happens to me too sometimes

Most of the time it isn't - despite people thinking otherwise. The majority of the time it is simply a normal chest ache. But if you are 100% certain it is centered on your left side of your chest, and doesn't seem to get any better I would suggest you see somebody.

Perhaps check it with a doctor as well - why take a risk when it comes to chest pain?

Is this just a recent development?

I had something similar. It started off feeling like really bad indigestion in the evening, by the night it had turned into sharp pains. It lasted for quite a few days and the doctor said it was a lung infection.

Has been happening for a few months, perhaps a year - don't really keep track.

Ah - from looking at the Wiki it does seem like it could be this. Will see a doctor if I feel worried though. Thanks, that has put my mind at rest a lot more :cute:

Someone beat me to it! Precordial catch. I was plagued with this when I was younger - it was the most horrendous sharp pain when I breathed in, only by breathing all the way in did it 'click' and the pain would disappear instantly. It should wear off as you get older, but see your GP if you're worried.

I'm 18 and didn't have it when I was younger... it's only started in the past year or so. Was just reading another article on it though and it seems to be more severe than what I'm experiencing, like it doesn't want to make me want to scream or anything like the article was suggesting - perhaps it varies for different people...

You have heart disease
Does it get worse in certain positions such a lying down? Does the pain only occur during exhaling and coughing?

The most common cause of chest pain in young people is costochondritis and what you've described does sound like it. Have a look over the symptoms here, have you experienced any of these?

And it's always advised to visit your GP if you're suffering from unexplained chest pain.
Happens to me occasionally as well. Only lasts for a couple breaths though and then disappears.
Happens to me too
I used to get this with a harmless and common condition intercostalitis but see the doc, its his/her call, you cant ignore chest pain
I'm 13 and I'm breathing in right now and it feels so painful and I can't breath properly and it's not going away?

This is a really old thread but call NHS 111 or get someone else to for you, if it's really bad go to A&E (which is probably where they'll send you anyway). If you're asthmatic or anything keep taking your inhaler but do the same thing- the asthma UK website has good guidelines to follow for that.
