Re: Engineering Applicants (2012 entry)about the personal statement, it wont really matter too much, it just shows you're interested in different bits of engineering, but i got discouraged from applying to UCL for mechanical. Loads of people told me that it was really bad. Anyone else hear this??(Original post by Jeid1)
out of interest, does anyone know whether UCL are particularly difficult to get into for Mechanical Engineering?
And also 4 of my options are for aerospace/aeronautical whereas one being UCL is mechanical. If my personal statement is concentrated on both mechanical and aerospace will that matter (as surely aerospace is just a stream of mechanical) ? -
Re: Engineering Applicants (2012 entry)Nothing to back it up. Might go for UCL rather than sussex too.(Original post by House Dagoth)
the predictions are a bit outrageous. Do you have anything to back them up?
either way, I think you should apply to one insurance choice with req BBC.
good luck,
Dagoth Ur
No point because if I dont get any offers, I'de rather take a gap year and reapply to a good uni rather than paying 9000 a year to go to a BBC uni. -
Re: Engineering Applicants (2012 entry)On league tables its around 11th. But I did hear that too. Lets all be honest, any degree from UCL is prestigious enough to get you a job in your area of specialism.(Original post by kurovalte)

Re: Engineering Applicants (2012 entry)That's not how things work. If you can't demonstrate why you are in the top X% of applicants, where X is the percentage of applicants that the company are recruiting, then you won't get the job, regardless of what university you attended. Also consider there will be many people who have not heard of it either.(Original post by Jeid1)

Re: Engineering Applicants (2012 entry)I'm a girl doing mechanical engineering! It can go in your favour sometimes(Original post by student14s)
I got 3 As in my AS and am planning on Mechanical engineering for fall 2012. Cept already more than ten people from friends and family have 'advised' me not to go for Mechanical Eng because Im a girl. They think the jobs for Mechanical Eng have more scope for boys. That kinda crap really annoys me. Then some have suggested Id rather not try because even if I get accepted, according to them I wont get the student visa for that specific city because the population of that city has increased. :l
Go for it! Who cares what anyone else says, it's what you want, not what they want

Re: Engineering Applicants (2012 entry)Just proves how gender stereotypical people are. I know the ratio for mechanical engineering is something like 90:10 at most places but I think being female is probably a plus because the industry is dying for some female mech engineers. I'm male but I don't think you should be put off by it because of the gender ratio.(Original post by student14s)

Re: Engineering Applicants (2012 entry)I don't think you should, it would be very unlikely that you will get an offer. Majority of their applicants will have 4-5 As at AS and that many A* predictions.(Original post by IcedTea&PotNoodle)
Hey everyone,
I was just thinking of swapping one of my choices (Southampton) with Imperial. What does everyone reckon my chances are?
I got A*A*AAAAABBBB at GCSE and ABBD at AS. Predicted grades are AAA. -
Re: Engineering Applicants (2012 entry)I was thinking that too, I saw you sent your UCAS. Got any offers yet?(Original post by Willheath)

Re: Engineering Applicants (2012 entry)not yet, but surrey have invited me to their engineering department for a visit day kind of thing.(Original post by IcedTea&PotNoodle)

Re: Engineering Applicants (2012 entry)
Oh yeah and if anyone wants to ask anything to a fourth year mechanical engineering student with an industrial placement anything - as long as it's not about A-levels as I don't have a clue about that, nor about different universities in England since I'm not too knowledgeable about them either - go ahead.
Hopefully other people from other disciplines can chime in as well. -
Re: Engineering Applicants (2012 entry)Thats good, I was also going to apply to surrey but I decided to change it to birmingham about 2 days ago.(Original post by Willheath)

Re: Engineering Applicants (2012 entry)I think you should stick with Southampton not only because you have a better chance of getting an offer but also because their department is very well recognised and personally i keep Southampton up there with Imperial, I wouldnt mind going to any of the two.(Original post by IcedTea&PotNoodle)

Re: Engineering Applicants (2012 entry)At the Durham open day, I spoke to the head of admissions and he said to apply for the MEng and the BEng as they are treated separately.(Original post by maloneyt)
Why are you applying for the MEng & BEng? i believe there is no point as they will just make you an offer if you miss the MEng but meet the BEng and vice versa. Unless you're only interested in these 3 uni's.
I have changed to only applying to Warwick for the MEng as they have changed the grade requirements to AAB for both and applying to Loughborough instead. -
Re: Engineering Applicants (2012 entry)That isn't always true. There are many universities that will reject candidates who miss their offers for the MEng and not automatically consider them for the BEng instead.(Original post by maloneyt)
