I'm not there atm - I just hadn't updated my user title. However I hope to go back in a little while once I can read Chinese to a reasonable level.

How come you don't have MDBG on yet?
http://www.mdbg.net/
It's the best one I've found so far.

Mh, I disliked Guangdong. I was in Huadu for 5 weeks and it killed me. Guangzhou was nice though, but nothing tops Shanghai.
Is there any free cantonese speaking and reading kinda thing?

I don't know anything about Cantonese, but I've heard good things about this site: http://www.cantonese.sheik.co.uk/
Could someone recommend me a small sized book (not a4) that teaches me to read Chinese
I found one in my library but there is something I don't like about it now.

I want something to slowly introduce new characters and as I progress into the book the English is removed and replaced with Chinese.

Yeah... Well if we're leaving the mainland I have to say HK is pretty nice too... *.* *Has just started Cantonese after a recent trip to HK convinced me that HK is "the" place to live.*

Pleco came out for Android in the past few days and the basic version is free. Some of the add-ons are expensive, but it's probably the best smartphone app out there atm.
pleco is great ive had it for a few months guess it was beta? never noticed because a knew about it before I got my phone so i just downloaded it with mins of turning it on. I fact it was the only reason I got a phone with android os because I wanted pleco.
If you are learning Chinese you must download this program and if you can spare the cash get some of the addons.

Do you have the OCR add-on? If so, what do you think of it?
No i dont Im sure I will buy it this year.
If it works well I bet its one of those things you will not be able to live without as a Chinese learner
Is anyone here doing AS/A2 Chinese?

Yeah, I'm doing AS Chinese and I'll definitely be doing A2 next year. It's nice to see someone else doing it too! I've got my speaking on the 9th May so I'm sort of ****ting bricks for that :s-smilie: it's horrible knowing that so many people doing the same course as you are actually Chinese!

Are you AS or A2? I presume you're with Edexcel as well so how did/ are you preparing for it? 这个考试让我担心极了!

不過我想我將來就該學普通話...

Yeah.. I thought those question marks were just me but it seems it's the website :P

Eugh, yeah traditional characters I've no chance of understanding that! I had to shove that in Google translate to get the simplified characters  You're right I'm doing Mandarin and damn another Chinese guy that's obviously bordering fluent and puts me to shame haha!

My ability to speak in Mandarin is so disgustingly bad due to a combination of idiots in my class and complete neglect of speaking Chinese in class  On multiple occasions I've told my teacher to conduct lessons solely in Chinese but it's never stuck because everyone else in my class just don't try at all :frown:

So yeah at the moment my teacher's making us prepare short essays about topics that are likely to come up like hobbies or holidays and next week the teachers will be putting on extra speaking lessons so I'll pretty much be working my arse off all week next week!

Have you done anything yourself? There's really not so much we can do since it's a randomly selected topic without an examiner... unlike Spanish in which I literally learned 7 pages off by heart and just manipulated the language to answer questions :P

I can show you the essay **** we're doing to give you a little inspiration if you'd like? You can just pop it into Google to get the traditional stuff
haha sorry, I'm much more used to traditional

不过我还能输入拼音

That really sucks about your class, it really helps if you just get immersed :/
Maybe you can practice with your parents too?

I've not done much, though our teacher sets essays every week and pretty much devotes our lessons to speaking, it really sucks about being given a random topic though! I usually can't prepare in time...

I wouldn't mind looking at your essay thing, it'll be helpful since I never get to see other examples of work  You could look at mine too if you want, though they're probably pretty crappy...

Haha sure I'll post it on this in a sec, post anything relevant to the speaking whenever

And practise with with my parents? Hah! I'm not Chinese -- I'm learning it from scratch  that's so my point though: everybody else is Chinese! I'm so screwed!
