Re: The "I'm applying to Edinburgh for 2012 entry" applicant chat threadI didn't hear back for four months from Edinburgh, six months for one of my other choices. It's no big deal, really.(Original post by janjanmmm)
I have applied for postgraduate - MSc in Economics Finance on Nov. 21, yesterday got an email from admissions that I am accepted and will be getting an official offer next week. It took 10 days.
If you have not heard back for almost 3 month it is not a good sign, email admissions and ask. In fact, I have emailed them before applying and they are very nice and responsive, they can pre-check if you are qualified so that you would not waste time if you are not. -

Re: The "I'm applying to Edinburgh for 2012 entry" applicant chat threadPG applications tend to be responded to rather quicker, the poster might want to get in touch with the graduate admissions department.(Original post by Static.)

Re: The "I'm applying to Edinburgh for 2012 entry" applicant chat threadYes they reply much quicker if you are international. I applied for entry 2012 from an American boarding school (but I'm British) and I got an offer within 4 weeks. Its because most internationals/ american school system applicants have already taken their qualifications.(Original post by Ronda)
They have until the start of May to make offers. You'll most likely be waiting until March-ish unless you're an international student.
I applied for biological sciences with AP tests I took last spring and my SAT scores. Good luck to everyone! -
Re: The "I'm applying to Edinburgh for 2012 entry" applicant chat threadNo its because internationals aren't subject to the same restrictions on places as the UK/EU students because they're ineligible for UK government support. Plenty of UK students apply with their grades - most Scots do. With internationals its literally a case of "does this person meet the entry requirements? yes/no" and sending through a decision as it literally doesn't matter how many offers/acceptances they do as they can have as many internationals as they want. With the home applicants on the other hand, there's only ever going to be X amount of spaces available and universities are heavily fined for each additional student over their funding quota that they accept meaning very over subscribed universities like Edinburgh often wait until after the Jan deadline to start making decision as they then can compare the entire applicant pool to each other when making decisions to ensure the best people get the offers.(Original post by mid112358)

Re: The "I'm applying to Edinburgh for 2012 entry" applicant chat threadthat and apparently any non academic factors. personal statement, reference, anything else.(Original post by oxymoronic)

anyway i reckon waiting til the deadline to make decisons is a good thing. at least you'll know they give out fair decisions from edinburgh, as opposed to other unis where the potential of one student who applied early may be less than one who gets rejected because they applied late and the quotas have been taken up. -
Re: The "I'm applying to Edinburgh for 2012 entry" applicant chat threadIn all honesty, as internationals I highly highly doubt Edinburgh will look at your reference/PS beyond checking that you've not been listed as an axe murderer or something because international students for everything other than medicine are guaranteed an offer providing they meet the minimum entry requirements.(Original post by jacksonriddle)

With regards to your second point, I do think it is a good thing yes but at other universities it isn't as though applying in December rather than September will make it any harder for you to get a place. If you're good you'll get one anyway, and if you're bad you'll be rejected. The majority of people fit into the "broadly average for this university" sort of grouping and they are kept on hold until after the Jan deadline or until more applications have come through for them to be compared with by tutors. The universities do this every single year and can do it to a great degree of accuracy - they know the typical profile of the students they admit and can make decisions accordingly. They know the typical profile of students they see in September and then December, so again can adjust how they do offers to suit the time of year. Its a big numbers game and statistical thing. Applying earlier/later doesn't make any difference as long as you meet the deadline. I'd say the main reason places like Edinburgh wait is because then they spend less time (only semester two) dealing with UCAS rather than the entire academic year. -
Re: The "I have an offer from Edinburgh" threadHigh five for architecture :P(Original post by nokwok)

Re: Edinburgh Uni..HELP!
I have applied for BSc Sport Science, but reading forums about other applicants to Edinburgh University I don't think I have much of a chance of getting in..
GCSE I obtained 1A* 8A 3B
AS
Business - C
Extended Project - B
Biology - C
Art - B
Psychology B
For A2 I am taking Biology, Psychology and Art. Retaking a module in both Biology and Psychology
I am predicted AAB (very optimistic) but on the prospectus Edinburgh ask for BBC for Sport Science which I know I should get
I'd say my personal statement is quite good, a lot of extra curricular activities, dancing since the age 4 with distinctions in most of my exams, cross country for the county quite sporty, volunteer work in teaching dance along side my dance teacher to the younger children (3-5 year olds)
But reading about people applying to Oxbridge as well as Edinburgh I know I'm nowhere near as academic as them, anyone think I have a chance? Or know people there with similar grades to mine that have had an offer -
Re: The "I'm applying to Edinburgh for 2012 entry" applicant chat threadmhm... i guess the only thing that limits the number of international offers they give is physicaly space. which is why medicine is so hard to get into still for international applicants. anyway it might be really insignificant but the chance of an international applicant taking up their offer as firm might be less because many of them apply to other places as well as the uk.(Original post by oxymoronic)

Re: Edinburgh Uni..HELP!you've got to remember that people who are applying to oxford as well as edinburgh are applying to do things like history and nuclear astrophysics (not sure if thats a real subject, it just sounds academicy) which place a very heavy influence on academic achievement whereas (i think, so correct me if im wrong) sport science is more practical based (no idea how you'd do practical history) so things like dance and athletics would be more important.(Original post by gpostleth)

in my experience universities decisions are based on YOU not your academics (as long as you meet minimum requirements) -
Re: The "I'm applying to Edinburgh for 2012 entry" applicant chat threadi know i responded earlier but i've only realised i might've been wrong about this. a friend of mine is applying to the same course as me, sent theirs off weeks before and hasn't heard back. also his grades are far exeeding mine (though we both exceed the entry requirements), and obviously both international, but i already have an offer.(Original post by oxymoronic)

How likely am I to get an offer?
I sent my UCAS form away a few weeks ago but I was wondering if anyone whos already sent theirs away or applied last year has any idea what I should expect.
I've applied for Genetics and I have AABBB (history, english, maths, biology and chemistry) and I'm studying AH Chemistry and Biology (predicted Bs) this year along with Higher Spanish (predicted A)

Re: The "I'm applying to Edinburgh for 2012 entry" applicant chat threadHas your friend contacted Admissions? we had a similar situation and emailed them- turned out there was a small paperwork mix-up, that they were very friendly about fixing. Still haven't heard a result though...(Original post by jacksonriddle)

Re: The "I'm applying to Edinburgh for 2012 entry" applicant chat threadno, because the same thing happend in other universities we have in common, i did apply for a joint and they applied for single honours, i believe at edinburgh i am at a different school.(Original post by DCDude)

Re: The "I'm applying to Edinburgh for 2012 entry" applicant chat threadWell then you didn't apply for the same course(Original post by jacksonriddle)

Admissions work in weird and wonderful ways. There could be an array of reasons why your friend hasn't heard back and you have done, but they will do eventually. His school might only look at applications every few weeks, for example. -
Re: How likely am I to get an offer? No one can tell you. You probably have a slightly lower grade profile than other applicants from your Highers but I don't really know what the minimum grades are for genetics as I know its different to the HSS school.(Original post by KatieLS)

Providing you meet the entry requirements then you stand as good a chance as everyone else. No one can really start to play guessing games or make predictions.
