Word Limit 1500 - what should the minimum be?

This is going to sound ridiculous, but this is my first essay for uni, and I don't want to screw up (my referencing is gonna do that for me!)

The word limit if 1500, so obviously it has to be under that, but what should the minimum be - Can you get penalized for not having enough words (a sensible amount obvs) or is it as long as your concise, it doesn't matter?

How many words would you usually write for it?

Thanks  x
I also have a 1500 limit essay it has to be -10% which is the minimum and +10% the maximum.

1425 would be your definite safe point (5%). It might be as low as 10% though, but I know in one of my manuals for a write up I only have a 5% limit...

I think the norm is usually 10% though.

As someone above said, the standard is plus/minus 10%. Aim to get as close as you can to 1500 without waffling. However, on your first draft, ignore the word count other than to have a rough idea of how much depth is needed. See what you end up with then add depth if it's too short and remove waffle and complexities if it's too long.
