• Great campus
• Beautiful city
• Friendly and enthusiastic staff
• Interesting and well-run department open day
• Industry placement in 4th year, rather than 3rd like most other universities

Other choices:

• Cambridge (Biological Natural Sciences)
• Nottingham (Medicinal and Biological Chemistry with an Assessed year in Industry)
• Nottingham (Biochemistry and Biological Chemistry)
• Leeds (Medicinal Chemistry with Year in Industry)

Additional information: I'm hoping to receive an offer (if I'm lucky enough) within the next week or two as York seem very good at giving out offers quite quickly. For chemistry, applicants are required to attend a post-application visit day (with an informal interview) but because I visited the department on one of their pre-application days (which are exactly the same as the post-app days) I don't have to go back and should get an offer soon.

Are the really quick responses just for people who have already gone to a pre-application open days? Or do some people, who haven't gone to any sort of open day, get an invite to an 'interview' very quickly?

I chose York as the course seems to be great and I like the collegiate system as it seems really inclusive. Also the York students in schools is a great initiative which is an area of interest to me for educational policy.

Other choices are: goldsmiths, LSE, Bristol and Birmingham.

Anyone's else applying for SocPo?

Hello! Good to meet a like-minded applicant

In terms of an actual offer, a quick repsonse will only for people who have attended the pre-app days as they're quite an important part of the application process at York, as well as Nottingham and Leeds I think (I'm not too sure why chemistry is so important that it needs these days but never mind). Having said this, I haven't had an offer yet so the responses may not be quick at all (or they're going to reject me ).

As for when they'll start inviting applicants to the post-app days, I have no idea. If you send your application in early, they may invite you straight away, they may not. You're still at an advantage in the fact that your application is done and dusted and the admissions officers will have had a chance to spend a while looking at it though. The post-app invitations may be automatic so they might just wait until the new year to send them out to everyone but I think there's a chance they send them out on an individual basis. Either way, if your application is in early you'll find out!

Sorry I haven't really answered your question but good luck!

This sounds unusual. So are you applying for another UG degree? Also, where are you studying physics at the moment?

Oh no I'm not studying physics anymore. I did the first year 2010-2011 but decided it wasn't for me anymore. Very interesting but not something I could see myself doing for another two years without burning myself out essentially I've dropped out and am reapplying with a sort of gap year

Sorry, I meant the latter - either a pre- or post-app day should be attended. The pre-app day provides no advantage other than the possibility of receiving an earlier offer. It certainly doesn't guarantee one.

I doubt it. On the pre-app day I attended there were about 30 of us and I think there were around 5 or 6 pre-app days over the summer. Compare those numbers to the 1,274 applicants (for 200 places) in 2010 and I think it's safe to say that the majority don't attend the pre-app days! They aren't advertised much and I only found out about them by going through the York website.

How academic is the interview, for chemistry? I know it isn't very academic, but do they ask you any academic questions at all?

Congratulations! Very good chance of an offer now!

Well, mine wasn't that academic and was very informal but I would think some of the interviewers might ask slightly more academic questions than mine did, especially on a post-app day rather than a pre-app day.

Just make sure you can remember all your basic chemistry knowledge, can talk about a particular experiment you've carried out in class and have a few things to mention that show an interest in chemistry outside of your studies. They really are quite informal (mine was anyway) so I doubt you'll be expected to write an equation, draw a mechanism or anything like that. Also, prepare plenty of questions you might want to ask them. The more you ask them, the less they can ask you!

Thanks, yeah good chance as they said "once you have visited York for your interview we can guarantee that you will receive an offer of a place" so I guess that, as long as I don't do anything really silly, they will offer me a place, touch wood.

And I'm not really sure, I always assumed up until college that everyone did that amount. I went to a "Language Specialist" school or something so did French, Spanish and German so I think that may be it

By basic I mean very basic. As in GCSE and early AS stuff. In all honesty, you probably won't even need that but it might be useful just so you can give a technical answer or two, even if you aren't specifically asked for one.

As you said, the interview is pretty much a formality and is only a small part of the visit. It's just as much of a chance for you to check that you want to go there as it is for them to check that they want you. They've basically given you an offer already so don't worry!

I take it you were referring to '69'? If so, how immature I'm sure my post count was 70 when you said that though...?
