What happens to the AS level you drop before you start your A2 courses?

I am currently in sixth form and doing my 4 a level choices. So once I reach the end of this year I will drop one subject before continuing on to complete the full A level of my other subjects.

So my question is, what happens to that AS? Does anybody care about it? Because when I look at UCAS and different degrees etc. it always mentions the three full a levels, but what about the AS?
I mean, if it's not going to be acknowledged why does everyone have to do four, and sometimes 5 A levels?

I hope somebody can explain this to me.
Thank you!
I think it is done to show you which you are best at before you pick...

It is 'cashed in' as a separate qualification - an AS Level... which is worth UCAS points depending on which grade (60 for an A to 20 for an E).

Some universities ask for it

For eg you may get an offer of A*AAa

In some areas it is essential
Eg some degree courses say that Maths must have been studied to at least A Level
It will sit there forever pondering why you never carried it to A2. Some Universities may be interested in it, but it will fade away, slowly over time, like markings on a gravestone. Lost in time.
