LSE is more prestigious. But, to be fair, it's Sociology ( not knocking the subject) so I wouldn't base your decision on LSE's prestige which is largely derived from its Economics/Law/Government/International relations courses. I would choose the one which you prefer since I'm guessing you're not planning to go into one of those elitist careers, so any difference in prestige won't matter much.

While I don't necessarily agree with this, I thought I'd better say that I wasn't the one who negged you.

My initial post to this was going to be defending LSE's sociology dept....I guess I found my answer! So thanks.

I realised that since you've got +4 and the person who negged me had no rep power..

I don't think what I said came across well and may have appeared rude. What I was trying to say is that. a LSE Economics grad for example may have an edge over a Warwick Economics grad for jobs and 'arise' the wow factor. But, it probably wouldn't be the same for Sociology.. i.e someone wouldn't be 'wowed if you were to study sociology at LSE rather than Warwick, which is why I was saying that 'prestige' wouldn't be an neccessary deal breaker between the two.

LSE's sociology dept is excellent from what I hear, and so is Warwick's. LSE does have a first rate sociology dept, so I may have been abit hasty before, so I apologise. I'm just saying that for your course its probably best to choose the university you like best, unless you want to go into banking, law or something equally as elitist. I'm glad to hear that..its often hard to get across what you're trying to say via the web. I've actually got an almost identical dilemma between the two, but for Law!

I still can't decide between Bristol and Exeter for Psychology.
RHUL is my insurance (AAB).

Both AAA and I love Both of them, for different reasons.
Bristol has more prestige, amazing course,ranked higher, fewer student on the course, amazing city.
Exeter has a great course, good rep, I love the city,and great location and campus feel at Exeter.

I'm pretty sure I would be happy at either, what would you guys do?

Is this the straight course at Exeter? Have you been to both open days... I assume so. Is there any difference for you in any bursaries or costs or offer levels.. maybe that could decide it. Is Bristol ranked higher.. I know it is traditionally but right now?

My son firmed Exeter in the end.

I know its really hard. Bristol as a city is really fabulous I think and the unviersity is great. My daughter was at Bristol Uni and she loved the city. I did like the fact that Bristol said their top people do actually teach rather than palm it off to postgrads. That was a new thing I hadn't realised. However Exeter seems to be one of those places that really feels like home automatically to some people and I really liked the lack of hierachy between staff and students. I personally also liked the fact Exeter had that expertise in clinical in both their applied and general psych. and the animal stuff in the general sounded interesting. Bristol just doesn't cover those so well. Phew.... hard one

If all else fails try putting them in a hat and drawing out one. Agree with yourself to go to whichever emerges. Your reaction to the result will tell you if you got the right one....

I know what you mean - sometimes what you want to say comes across as too harsh, so you put a smiley to compensate! Haha

I guess a lot of it depends on whether you want to be in London or not! I've lived in London all my life and so the only drawback of putting LSE as my insurance would have been potentially living at home (as the accommodation was so expensive!). Are you going to the visit day in April?

Yeah the straight Psychology course at Exeter and Bristol. There is quite a big difference in funding, If I got to Exeter I will get 1000 more than at Bristol (as they don't give anything to any students even if there family earn below 25 thousand i think it is). However this shouldn't be a problem as I can make that up over the summer-hopefully.

Well I have been to 2 open days at Exeter and Im going to a post offer on Wednesday, but I think that will just make my decision even harder. I know I need to be the one to make it but ahahaha :P I'm sure you understand the feeling haha.

That's a really interesting point you make about Bristol, being taught by Bruce Hood (who did the Royal Institution Christmas Lectures ) does sound rather enticing.

I feel that Exeter is more like where I come from (Chichester),almost identical in fact aha, with lots of people I know firming Exeter. Whereas Bristol is massive and its not very cohesive.

I live in London aswell, which is why I've sceptical about choosing LSE over Warwick, because I really don't want to live at home, and I only live about 15 minutes away from LSE. It's for my firm though, which means the decision is a big one. I wouldn't see the point of moving out/living in halls either..when I could get bed and board for free at home, so I feel like I may aswell either get into **** loads of debt at Warwick or just stay at home. I've been to LSE soo many times, so probably not Well done on Cambridge hopefully all this talk will be in vain.

Leicester is not quite as good as Birmingham as an actual city though. (No offence to Leicester I'm sure its great but Birmingham is just bigger)

Birmingham for instance has internationally acclaimed theatre companies, great museums and galleries, more choice of night life, gigs etc and more shopping choice.

However it is important to consider your course. If Leicester is so far ahead then the choice might be obvious.

The post offer open day was good actually as they gave a talk on what distinguishes Exeter's course from others. There were lots of post grad and doctorate students around to ask questions of too.

I wouldn't be too worried about the size of Bristol as a city. The truth is that most university students live and socialise in certain parts of the city so it shrinks down to a manageable size in effect and it isn't a very scary city in terms of crime etc (Though there is some of course) It is hard though as my son really loved the campus type uni as opposed to the city type whereas my daughter would have hated a campus!

Do you have hobbies... my daughter did JuJitsu for instance and Bristol are the National Champions. Would there be anything like that for you... out of interest my son got that offer from Exeter re: money for higher grades... is that what you mean by the thousand.... I think its to tempt people who are going to get high grades to put them first.

The only thing I would say for |Bristol is try not to live too far out.. ie in their accomodation that is away from the university precinct as there's no bus and its a pain. There''s lots of accomodation much closer.

I'm having huge trouble choosing between Exeter and Sussex as my firm for English. Exeter is close to me, has a great reputation and is similar to where I live, whereas Sussex is ages away, but I really like the place and living in Brighton is something I would love to do. I need A*AA for Exeter and AAA for Sussex... and I'm stuck! Advice would be much appreciated!
