Its not scummy but most of the people who went to that uni from my sixth form were more interested in social aspects than the learning.

Wait a minute, did you just call me 'love'? Jesus...

So I can't dislike a place without having a 'chip on my shoulder'?

I'd like to know why some on here are so over sensitive to the fact that i don't like it.
Dunno if the guy is northern or not but saying 'love' in my town (I live in the North west) is more of a friendly way of saying 'dear'. Its not intended to be patronising however maybe this guy was intending it to be

Plunginton called the Gheto, that's new to me and I've lived here all my life. I think some people may have agoraphobia and have never left their flat near fishergate!

Preston is your typical northern town (I know, it's a city now). It's a bit run down, lacks a lot to do and rains a lot. other than that, it's fine.

The Uni itself is pretty up to date for Unis, the sports especially.

As places go preston/UCLAN is better than average.

most of plungington road that i've seen is really trampy looking and dirty... the kind of place you'd imagine the plague began at i remember my friend nearly rented a decent sized room for £40/w there (which says it all), but thankfully he had the sense not to. maybe there's a nice part of plungington that i haven't seen :/?

preston in general is a nice enough place though, it has everything u need... i'm from richmond in london which is quite a nice area, so i was skeptical about preston. i've been here for 2 years now and i have to say that i really like the uni campus, great mix of modern (media factory/tom finney etc) and classic (harris building etc).

is uclan uni scummy? no, it has decently ranked courses such as: law, pharmacy, dentistry etc... HOWEVER, the people who think it's a scummy uni are the people who think ALL ex-poly's are scummy. so the answer to this question depends on your opinion of ex-polys...

I've lived in preston all my life....well Leyland which is 5 minutes on the train. Preston isn't a city in the sense that liverpool and manchester are...but they are less than an hour away on the train so they are handy to visit. So is blackpool. Lancashire is a gorgeous place when you get out of the city centre...you should all go and try it someday. Every place has areas that aren't as nice as others. And yes it does look more bleak when its raining....but go out there and make the most of it! I've been at Liverpool uni for the last 3 years and yes compared to that, preston as a city isnt as good. but it isnt scummy and it definately isnt a ghetto. 5 minutes on a train and you can be in leyland and cuerden valley which is gorgeous. 10 minutes and you can be in st annes which is a lovely litle seaside town. 20 minutes and you are in blackpool. you arent far from lancaster either which is really pretty. its a great base for so many places. you all need to get out and explore the uni is really modern. some buildings at liverpool are still stuck in the 70s. noone ever said Preston was THE city of the north. some people just expect the world obviously....

This is a question that has been playing on my mind a lot, I'm currently deciding between UCLan and York st John and obviously York is a nicer city but I think I'd prefer to go to UCLan as a university. My boyfriend works full time so we would be living there full time, over Christmas and over the summer so it has to be a liveable environment. I don't care much about the nightlife, as far as I'm concerned it about the people you're with rather than the nightlife itself, mostly it's the shopping, job prospects and general safety that I'm concerned about. So far this thread hasn't actually answered much, there seem to be a lot of negatives concerning Preston but also quite a few positives. Anyone got anything substantial to say about the city as a city in it's own rights, not just a uni city?

to be honest that shopping isnt too great at the moment. like most places hit by the recession quite a few places have shut down like DPs, burton, la senza. theres still a primark, new look, river island, topshop and next though. but there are quite a few empty shops. job prospects probably depends on what field you are wanting to go into.

It depends on what he can get, at the moment he is working in a bank so something along those lines. Nothing in retail or anything.

Preston is nowhere near as bad as people make out in comparison to Sacramento, trust me!

The type of crime is typical to most university cities, tending to be anti-social behaviour and theft such as breaking into houses etc, although I still don't hear about as many break-ins as I'd thought I would.

I think they're just using ghetto as an over-exaggerated term, you'll be safe here without your pistol!
    hi vickytink,
glad to get an answer.. of course i wont be bringing my guns lol.. that would be excessive.
the more research i do, the more it seems like it's all an exaggerated mess when it comes to students saying it's ghetto. UK perception of ghetto is far different than my perception. California US crime is far worse than the movies make it out to be.

Tbh, the uni is pretty decent here; and I think it depends a lot on where you lived before you come to preston as to how you find it.

In summer (or when its sunny) avenham park is a fantastic place to be and theres perks of living in a city centre and nightlife can be decent. However, think it gets a bad rep cos theres a concentrated area of street drinkers and other ne'er do wells in the town centre from "rougher areas" nearby.

UCLan is kinda scummy, but its such a good laugh. I wouldn't judge a place on it's looks because even if you pick the most beautiful city, you may still hate going to university there. Honestly, the best decision I have ever made... probs why I'm doing my masters here too (the £2,000 off is a good reason too!)

Sheffield Hallam. Was supposed to be going there original but there was a mix-up with my results, which led to me going to UCLan through clearing. Was on the Computers Games Enterprise course, now doing Games Software Development, much better course.
sounds like you were after a larger city.

At the end of the day its a small city (no cathedral) compared to other official cities, e.g. Manchester. You cant really compare the two. I think anywhere is the same anyhow in places, i.e. town centres are filled with all the sames shops.

Its just a question of size

I've decided on UCLan, it was a better course, and I grew up in Leicester and have lived in Liverpool and Edinburgh so I'm really not bothered by smaller cities, I actually prefer them to bigger ones like Birmingham. It was more the calibre of city, whether it's the kind of place I could enjoy living and could live easily, having lived in a fairly average city, a busy modern city and a beautiful, historic city.

Just a not about safety, the city of Preston is generally considered a safe place to live. Even so, the University takes the security and safety of its students very seriously. They have 24 hour security presence on campus with CCTV coverage. In addition, there are site wardens available to deal with any issues arising out of hours.

The Students’ Union also operates a safety bus scheme to take students home from the main campus. It runs until the early hours of the morning. The driver will drop the student off at the door and will wait until they have actually gone into the house. Additionally, the Union has made special arrangements with a local taxi firm whereby, if a student has run out of money and is some distance from home, they can telephone for a taxi, show their Union card, and they will be taken home. The Students’ Union will then recover the money from the student and pay the taxi firm.

    Regards

Preston is far from fantastic but it could be MUCH worse, the city is getting a make over because it's guild year and it's making a difference but not as much as it could.
