Re: Lancaster 2012 Applicants!
Looking for advice on accommodation from current or recent past students. I'm a very mature student, so I'm looking for somewhere that won't be party central and a room that has quite a lot of floor space. I've looked at the website details and all the rooms seem to be on the small side.
Also, the university has a very negative policy on students bringing cars onto campus. How do students with cars live with this? Is bringing motorcycles on campus acceptable? In case my apparent none green policy offends, I'm very pro cycling and using public transport. However, I frequently travel to places where there is no public transport.
Finally, the sports facilities seem to be very pricey compared to other universities. Is it not possible to get inclusive membership without expensive stuff like saunas included, which must be expensive.Last edited by grazie; 26-05-2012 at 17:46. -
Re: Lancaster 2012 Applicants!Trust me, there are universities out there that are a lot more expensive than Lancaster [just like the one I am at now(Original post by grazie)

Sports centre:
This page gives the details of the four membership levels and what is included: http://sportscentrelancaster.co.uk/m...ip-and-prices/Membership Prices
Student
Student membership is available at the following prices for 12 months: Bronze £100, Silver £150, Gold £200 or Platinum £250. This can be paid upfront or per term. There is no joining fee. The minimum membership period is 3 months.
Or, you can 'pay as you play' so thus only when you go in to use the place. http://sportscentrelancaster.co.uk/pay-as-you-play/
The rooms are a pretty standard size. Some of the older accommodation, esp in Bowland, has larger rooms. The standard [rather than ensuite] rooms often have a larger floor space too, as they don't have the room taken up by the ensuite pod.
You can apply for a permit for your car. If you meet the criteria, you can get a pass to have it on campus. Otherwise, you can pay to park - weekdays 8am until 6pm - and park it for free at other times.

* Varying permit lengths for this type of permit will apply to reflect the sometimes ‘temporary’ nature of the mobility impediment or sick dependent relative. This temporary approach to permit eligibility should provide a fairer and more appropriate way to manage the need based on temporary mobility or sickness issues. This is to be addressed through the issuing of termly permits.

Re: Lancaster 2012 Applicants!
Thanks very much for your detailed reply affinity89.
So does Bowland Upgraded get you a bigger room than Standard?
I'm sure it was £300 for Platinum when I originally checked...obviously not. Still £250 is more than I pay now as a none student for very similar gym membership (without sauna) and lots more than all the other uni's I considered. Glasgow was £50!
What about motorcycles? -
Re: Lancaster 2012 Applicants!£200 is actually a fairly reasonable price compared to most sports centres.(Original post by grazie)

It is brand new as well. -
Re: Lancaster 2012 Applicants! Thanks for your help!(Original post by Davott)
Accommodation is completely separate to the course, which means you can be living with people from a ridiculous range of different courses (I have Physics/CompSci/Criminology/Advertising etc.)
Just keep an eye on your email
do they send out emails when you should apply for accommodation I have nO idea which college to pick lol

Re: Lancaster 2012 Applicants!I will do Politics but I will choose as minors Law and Criminology!(Original post by Lexi2012)

As for college, choose a couple based on cost/type of accommodation then come visit the uni and look at the ones you shortlisted. That made my mind up. If your not planning on coming up again, just ask any questions you have on here
It depends. If you have the money and you desperately want en-suite then yes it is worth it. Im en-suite this year and I love having my own bathroom so close (like, 3 steps and I can shower(Original post by BeccaCath94)
Is it worth going for superior ensuite?
). However, if you don't want to spend that much money, the standard options are all really nice. The shared bathrooms are actually more like a normal (but bigger) en-suite bathroom, just not connected to a room.
The only place I would not recommend is Bowland en-suite as everything in it was really dated. -
Re: Lancaster 2012 Applicants!Ahh thank you for the advice(Original post by Davott)

So what ensuite room/college are you in this year?
I do want ensuite...I think its worth the extra money! -
Re: Lancaster 2012 Applicants!Furness/Superior En-suite. I like it, only downside is you don't get a communal social area other than the kitchen. Although, only a few places offer that (mainly townhouses).(Original post by BeccaCath94)

I think Superior Standard is just bigger. Don't quote me on that.(Original post by lampshade1)
What on earth is the difference between Superior Standard and Upgraded standard?
I'm on the course right now, feel free to chuck any questions at me. -
Re: Lancaster 2012 Applicants!Ooh well its probably too late now to ask whether its good as I've already accepted it :P But is there a lot of choice and flexibility in the modules? And I was thinking of applying to Grizedale as its closest to the mangement school.. although a few people have said you hardly get any lectures in there? D: Thanks, and hope youre enjoying the course!(Original post by Davott)
