UCL Archaeology 2012 Undergraduate Applicants

Hiya, just wondered if many other people on here have applied for courses at the Institute of Archaeology at UCL for 2012? I've sent off my UCAS application and everything (a little early I know, but I'm mega keen) and had the confirmation email, and am now eagerly awaiting the next step!

Also, quite interested to know peoples A levels, predicted grades and what you guys put on personal statements and things  REALLY nervous!

I applied for Arch and Anth at UCL for 2012  I got an email confirming it as well... Where else have you applied?

I'm predicted A*AA but that doesn't mean I'll get them! At AS I did Geography, Religious Studies, Art and English Literature, but I've since dropped RS

Personal Statement was... tough.. haha. I did my best but, I don't know what they'll think at all..

I applied for Archaeology with a year abroad at UCL for 2012.

I'm doing the french baccalaureate, with predicted grade of 16/20. Last year, there were two anticipated exams: TPE (personal project) 11 (just extra points though, so it's not that important) and French Literature 19,5 (yeah, my best subject).

I have absolutely no idea if my personal statement was at all good. I just wrote why I love archaeology, why it's important to history, anthropology and ancient literature, some of my personal experiences with it, some books I read, and my hobbies (which have nothing to do with archaeology: fiction reading and languages).
do any of you have an idea of when we might get offers? it's only been a week, and I already can't stand the wait!

I do archaeology. They take a while, UCL was the last place to give me an offer if I recall correctly.
GOOD LUCK GUYS. It's amazing!!!

RE: Offers- I had my form in at the start of November, a questionnaire in mid-December and an interview in mid-January and an offer a few days later. So it will probably take a while, I think they have about 4 interview batches depending on when you get your stuff in.

Ask me anything about the course/uni, I will reply within my full able capacity having been here for just over 3 weeks :p:

Haha wow, you guys have really good grades  I'm predicted A*A*A in English Lit, Archaeology and History at A level, and I have an A in Media Studies and a C in Classical Ancient History at AS level.

The five I've applied for are UCL of course, Leicester (who I've already have an offer from!), Cambridge, Southampton and Reading. But UCL is my dream uni :P

Yeah, personal statements were hard! I wrote about my fieldwork experience (I did a dig with Newcastle Uni in the Summer) and how I decided to do Archaeology after starting the A level at college. And of course, the usual about clubs, DofE and all that jazz

Has anyone else done Archaeology at A level by the way? Or is it just me? :L

I didn't get the opportunity to do Archaeology A-level at my school... I would have loved to though...

I never realised that UCL did interviews! That could be fun then ;D

It's really good to hear that other people are interested in Archaeology out there. No one else at my school is considering it - there are so many people applying for engineering or medicine!

Yeah, I don't think many centres offer it :/

Oh boy yes! You get invited to an open day, and get interviewed while you're there. Apparently, once you get to the interview stage you have about a 50/50 chance of getting a place, and the interview decides it :s-smilie:

I know! It's the same at my school, but in the past a few people from my college have gone to do Archaeology (but as we can do the A-level it's bound to happen). I think a girl last year is now doing Arch/Anth at Oxford
Hah, I think I'm the only person in the whole history of my high school who's going to study archaeology (terribly snooty private school in Switzerland, where everyone studies engineering, medicine or business).

I've also applied to Cambridge (Peterhouse), Durham, Edinburgh and SOAS (though I don't think I'll go there even if I'm accepted. it seems that it's not that good, according to what others have been saying).

Ahh, fair enough, Archaeology is a bit of a specialist interest :P

Ooh some good unis there! I wish you all the best.

Now I just need to get started on my written submission work for Oxford...

Oh God not the written work... How have you coped with the 300 word statement? I wanted to say so much! Which college have you applied to yakuzakitty?

Also, did anyone else get an email from UCL with a questionnaire?! It's all kicking off!

I haven't started, but I'm going to do it this week. Umm St Hugh's, I submitted an open application and was put there.

No, I haven't got a questionnaire! :s-smilie: When did you submit your application?
Reply 13
Oh I applied to St. Hugh's. It's a really nice college.

I submitted my application on the 7th October and got an email from UCL I think last thursday? I think it must take a while as they have to email about 200 people, so, don't worry if you haven't got it yet.

I've had an email but no questionnaire... *crying*

Whaaat? Wait, so, are you through to the next stage?! I got a seperate email from the Institute of Archaeology congratulating me on reaching the 'next stage' of the process... If you have no email from IoA yet, you might still get one

I don't know, I haven't heard from them since they sent me a confirmation. I haven't recieved a rejection, so I don't think that's the case, maybe the Arch/Anth course guys are just more on top of things than the Arch people? At least I hope that's the case.

So you've already got a questionaire then? Congratulations!
Reply 17
Well, I'm sure you'll be fine! Yeah, maybe there are less Arch/Anth candidates than straight Arch so they're more likely to send ours quicker.. Still, give it time! I'm sure it'll be fine.

I have! I think it's so they have things to talk about at interview (if they invite you).. so, it's exciting.
Reply 18
Yeah, I'm probably just fretting over nothing

Ahh wow fantastic. I guess you're not allowed to say what the questionaire says but... Is it simple or confusing, or?

Also, it just occured to me that UC want their applicants to have a GCSE in a Modern Foreign Language. I did French at GCSE and got an A so I'm safe, but how about you?
Reply 19
Yeah!

Well, it's simple enough yeah. Only three or four proper questions with one fairly chunky question about a book (screw it I'll tell you), archaeological site, news story or artefact which interests you and what it reveals about the past or current concerns...

Oh, I did french as well.. I think I managed an A* so it's all good. My only concern is that I'm not a strong scientist and my GCSEs show that.
