Debating to study either Law/Law with Criminology or Psychology....?
I have a strong interest in both, and was set on law before I started to read about student's opinions towards studying law and how dull it can be. I'm really interested in the Criminology side of law but there aren't many places on the course. I'm probably just doubting my choice to study law or law with criminology and wondering if Psychology would suit me better. So just wondering if anyone is studying law or psychology in the UK (preferably at Manchester) and if they are willing to share their opinions? I really want to do something where I can help people and I don't know whether Psychology or Law is the best for that. I'm studying English Lit & Lang, History and Art and my predicted grades are AAA - if that helps at all

Although I don't study psychology at Manchester, I am in the 3rd year of my psychology degree and also have an interest in the law/crime side of things and so I hope I can help you a bit

The first thing I would ask yourself here is whether you prefer sciences or more of a humanities focus. From your A-level subjects it seems like you have a strong background in arts/humanities which would be much more suited for law, which is going to be more essay based compared to psychology which is very heavily scientific. If you struggle with science and maths I really would not recommend taking psychology at degree level. Although the A-level does not always come across as being particularly science based, this completely changes once you get to university and the focus is much more on writing scientific reports and statistics.

The other thing with psychology is that there is often very little choice in what modules can be taken until later in the degree - I had no choice in what I studied in the first two years, meaning I have ended up having to cover some topics I have very little interest in. I'm not sure how much you know about psychology but the range of topics is very diverse, you can be taking modules in animal behaviour, child development, mental illness and cognitive neuroscience all at the same time! So if you are only interested in one area (forensic psychology in your case) its not necessarily the best thing as many universities will only have a couple of modules dedicated to this. If you do want to do psychology it might be worth looking at universities that are interested in the same areas you are, as this will often be reflected in the modules they run. Also, if you do decide to do psychology you can do a masters after your degree to specialize further - I'm going on to do a Forensic Psychology MSc next year which covers many aspects of law and crime so this could be an option to consider. Psychology does lead to a lot of careers where you can help people but I imagine law is very similar for this too

I hope this helps with the psychology side of things but from your post it seems like you're just having a few doubts about your choice. In all honesty I would try and get on a Law and Criminology course as that seems to be what you really want to do. Don't worry if its competitive, its at least worth a try!

Aw that's a brilliant reply thanks so much :ahee:! I have been thinking and researching since posting the thread and I've decided on law/law with criminology based on my a level subjects!

    Plus...I was awful at science

Law (or law with criminology:crossedf:) it is!
    Thanks again x
