aha, same, no way near as 'challenging' as I found it to be last June, probably got something to do with the new low that is A2

    Section you find most challenging?
Yeah thats what i was thinking aswell :P And Probably the green chemistry and things like why CFCs are bad with all them protocols and international agreements. You?

How is the alkene double bond formed?

    Describe some uses of alkenes

What is a disadvantage of using Hydrocarbons as alternatives to CFCs

Gotta agree with you on that one

Can't bring myself to learn the facts (kyoto protocol?)

Im guessing we need to know it though :/

    1) due to pie and sigma bonds
Pie- sideways overrlap between adjacent p orbitals
sigma bonds is the single covalent bond where shared electrons between two nuclei and electron density.
    2)Plastic packaging window frame, toys
    3) fill landfill site, release toxic gases

    Industrial Importance of Alkenes

Manufacture of Margarine (catalytic hydrogenation of vegetable oils)

    - Hydrogen molecules are added across double bonds of in addition reactions; by adding hydrogen molecules across different numbers of the many double bonds, margarine can be produced with different degrees of hardness. This affects the spreadability of the margarine)

    Polymer Production

    - Two types of Polymerisation: Addition polymerisation and radical polymerisation

A lot of the answers in the mark schemes for them questions about protocols and scientists telling countries what to do are normally just common sense. But when it comes to exams I have like no common sense at all aha

For number two, you forgot to mention the stage that takes place before use as plastic packaging/toys...they are first made into polymers following addition polymerisation

(which involves the addition of alkenes to a growing polymer chain)

    The MS is too pedantic

Did you memorise statistics? (with reference to things like the 'kyoto protocol')

Doubt we need to know it such an extent though

Homolytic fission is the breaking of covalent bonds whereby one of the shared pair of electrons goes to each atom in the covalent bond to form 2 radicals.

An example would be the initiation step in radical substitution
