I have no money and my family is too poor to give me any money and yet I don't qualify for maintenance grant because household income is above 42k which I find really hard to believe and that makes it so I can't get any national scholarship/bursaries from Portsmouth university and I am really confused as to what bank I am best to use so I can use the overdraft and I don't have any jobs or experience whatsoever, I have literally looked everywhere and no one will take me and others will just say go apply online, I do that and get no rejection replies or anything of that sort.

Mate, we are in the same boat, but it's not all doom and gloom. If it helps i'm with HSBC and their overdraft is I think as much as £3000 (do not quote me, that number pops into my head) and it's interest free

As for work, for the past 4 years I have been doing sport relevant work experience, however now I have asked my friends or anyone in the local area for free work, for example I will be shown how to work in the bar on Friday evening at my local sports club, this way i can put on my CV I have experience because i have no way in hell of getting a paid job!

Good luck with everything, hopefully see you in September

If your household income is over £42k how can your family not be able to afford to give you any money :O

anyone got their e intro pack yet? after paying the advance rent?
and do you just bring the confirmation letter and the accomadation stuff on the day u move into the accomadation? because there arent many letters about the actual course and how u register into it on the first day
From memory for the guys worrying about registration -

I went to Langstone. You're asked to park in the front car park to begin with so that you can be registered in and given your keys. When I booked in to sort out my registering, I was shown to a seat, told to wait, then a helper (member of Langstone staff) called me over. I signed the two copies of the contract (one for your records, one for theirs) and wrote my name/halls/block onto the little card you're given for the halls, then stuck my picture onto it (you need these to prove that you live on the campus, you may be asked to produce these occasionally by staff, I never was though. It's also very flimsy, so look after it). Once that's signed, you'll be given your keys and then you can move your vehicle closer to the block you need (West/East/Trust have car parks up the top, for QEQM blocks you may need to drive up the path, just be careful obviously and wary of others doing the same).

After that, you should have a piece of card saying where to register for the course at the Nuffield Student Centre during the Freshers week? You turn up there on your time and day and as I remember it was just signing a couple more forms. I think you get your Student ID there then too from memory. I'd take your confirmation letter too, you may not need it but at least you're covered.

If you want to join the doctors, take your NHS card and ask at the Surgery reception for the form to register, fill it out and you'll get a letter a couple of weeks later saying that's your primary GP.

Hopefully that helps, if not ask someone in a purple sweater, that's what they're there for and they were really helpful last year anyway.

Applying for History, got BBC at A-level (so hopefully an unconditional offer). Hoping to get into Trafalgar or Margaret Rule in terms of accommodation.
If you've already got BBC, it will be unconditional, what possible conditions could they give you?

Also, its Pompey, people get in with CCD...

Before you think I'm taking a pop at the uni, I'm not, I'm in 3rd year. Ha.

I got the minimal loan and no grant.

I worked 18 hours a week at B&Q, without it, I'd have been fooked.

If you're in ABSOLUTE financial trouble, there is a place you can go to in the Nuffield building, but they don't generally help first years.

You'll be fine, just be careful with money and you're going to HAVE to get a job.

Interestingly, they gave me a conditional at first before realising their mistake and changing it to unconditional.

If your parents have a mortgaged home in London (not a posh part) and other siblings to care for £42K just keeps the family with basics. Like others I will receive £3,000 in total even though I will be living away from. The current system is not fair because it does not take into consideration families overall living cost it seems to penalise those who work hard and who generally receives very little from the state.(bear in mind the £42K worker contributes more to the state as a higher tax payer)

May I suggest Save the Student? The website is a wonderful info source for students. If you need to check out bank accounts, they have a list of the top five here:
    http://www.savethestudent.org/money/...1.html#toplist

I'm already with Lloyds TSB, and they're changing my account over for me so I guess I don't have a choice. :P Just make sure you go for a bank where the overdraft is interest-free, otherwise they will slaughter you.

I think, as I have looked at the top/best accounts on offer would be to open one from the Cooperative bank as they have a guaranteed £1400 overdraft interest free in the first year then increments the overdraft to £1700 for year 2 and £2000 for year 3. I do understand that overdraft is meant to be used for emergencies but without it, I would be broke.

What I really don't like is how they want the first 1500 pound rent installment two weeks into living there. I'm on the lowest band so I can't go to my folks for money. I dislike how they don't give us the 600 pound June bill instead which would put less pressure on our wallets, and actually give us a chance to find work. I am lucky enough to get a student loan, but I don't want to blow that on rent...

I've drafted and re-drafted my CV like a thousand times. But with little prior experience apart from Charity shop work which I'm doing at the minute for a reference, I don't think there's much point seeing as I'm up against thousands of other students who have that experience.

    Bloody Catch-22. I blame Heller.

I'm with the co-op and they do seem really, really helpful. Like they seem like a decent bank and the overdraft is definitely a bonus.
Only downside is to open the account you have to put £300 in.
Definitely get a job in Portsmouth - the purple room people will help with your CV and advice/tips etc but my friend from another uni up north (which is cheaper) had to have a job to live sufficiently at uni.

If by chance I get my DSA I won't have to worry too much about the overdraft as long as I spend £40 or less on food every week.

you'll def spend less than that!
get your basics when you stock up - pasta, frozen bits & tins etc then that just means weekly you'll need a bit of fresh. sorted

I would want to manage my money for other things like leisure, going to the gym, because I heard gym membership is expensive. Also going to cinema once every month or so just so I don't bore myself to death from my work, of course my degree should be alright and shouldn't be that stressful. I'm not planning to go to any clubs, I don't party and i'm not an alcoholic so that won't give me any money problems.
