Re: Players Who Never Quite Reached Their PotentialDid he?(Original post by saggy8)
Had the potential to be the best striker in the world, has not become the best striker in the world. -
Re: Players Who Never Quite Reached Their PotentialWell with youngsters at big clubs you always have the issue of how much is actually potential and how much is hype.(Original post by simonbellringer)
Jeffers and Aliadiere to name but two. Though a lot seem to come out of Arsenal, United, Chelse and Liverpool with good potential that is never reached. And with Arsenal and United in their heydays, it was always going to be hard for budding young players to break through with the likes of Henry, Bergkamp, Pires, Campbell at Arsenal for instance, when those players were at their peaks.
Though I will add Eduardo to that list after his horrific leg break; such a shame for him. Rosicky has also struggled, though he seems to have peaked again this season.
Any young player that gets a couple of games with the first team at any of the top clubs is immediately tagged as a great prospect, whereas in reality they have nowhere near that much potential. -
Re: Players Who Never Quite Reached Their PotentialWell that's always true, but even those with the potential are often undermimed because of the quality of the first team the manager doesn't want to break up. Which is why players like Fabregas and Ashley Cole did so well, to rise up through the youth ranks to break into the first team, and at very young ages too!!(Original post by mackemforever)

Bit controversial but, Michael Owen, although that was mainly due to injuries.
Javier Saviola - he scored 60 goals in 3 seasons for Barca as a 20-22 year old, and then since then he's just bounced around from club to club being very average - he's only 30 now.

Re: Players Who Never Quite Reached Their PotentialHe was never going to be a top player tbh. Arsenal made a killing selling him though, especially after Spurs spent £15m and we took half through the sell on clause(Original post by Dan4444)

Re: Players Who Never Quite Reached Their PotentialNo not a top player, but I still think he would have been a good player (at least better than he is now), and so I do think that he is a player who didn't reach his potential.(Original post by Zürich)

If you'd paid more attention to him while he was at Rovers in 06/07 and 07/08, you'd have realised that he did have the potential to be a top player. He was Beckham's natural successor on the England right-wing, a fantastic crosser of the ball. Not the quickest, but he didn't need to be, he was always mentally one step ahead of his opponent. Sublime from set pieces, too. If he'd gone to a club where he was actually wanted after he left Rovers, rather than Spurs, who just buy everyone for the sake of it, then I have no doubt he'd have blossomed and that we'd be watching him rather than Milner play for England this summer.(Original post by Dan4444)
