Accommodation at University of Nottingham

Hello all
I'm from Buffalo, NY, USA and I'm studying at the University of Nottingham this upcoming Spring. From the pictures posted on their website, it seems that college accommodation is pretty different than here in the states. They look a lot smaller, and it seems that they're are a lot more single rooms than double rooms. In the states, one almost always rooms with a random roommate/friend. So, would it be weird if I applied to room with another person? (I figured it'd help me make some friends) Also, any recommendations of housing or advice for me? I'm a pretty social person so I'd like to house somewhere I can meet new people. The prices don't vary too much so I'm down for whatever! Thanks!! -Ashley
Yes, this is true. In england, most of our accomodation is 1 person per room. If you are a pretty social person, you will be able to make friends with people without sleeping in the same room as them. Nottingham uni does have a few rooms that are 2 people, but I think when you apply you are only likely to get one (if any rooms are indeed available) if you and a friend both state each others' names in your accomodation application.

Hey Ashley!
I'm going to Nottingham this Spring too! I'm coming from Auckland, New Zealand. So excited, first time in England and Europe  I've applied for Broadgate, then catered halls as my second choice. I've heard that the self-catered accomodation is much better for those who aren't in their first year haha.

Btw: Are you getting the shuttle on 29 Jan from Heathrow? If so I'll see you there!
I have a room on offer for the second semester if any of you want it, message for details.
I'm at Nottingham and I don't know of anyone who is sharing a room. I'm in catered halls, sharing a bathroom with one other person. It's quite a social environment, especially when a lot of people leave their doors open anyway. You're surrounded by people all the time anyway, sharing a room with someone isn't going to go change that much! I'd go mad sharing my room, I need my own space.

If you do go for halls and get given Lenton and Worthley, you should be chuffed - it's a great hall, the food is awesome
There are some shared rooms if that's what you want but the majority are single study rooms. There's a shared study which is a shared office space attached to two smaller bedrooms. That's also pretty social. In general though you'll make loads of friends in a single study room.
I don't really know much about room sharing but, if you're a social person, I'd suggest that you stayed either in catered halls or Broadgate. If I was applying again, I'd avoid St Peter's Court... It's pretty far out and not a very friendly environment. Best of luck

One piece of advice STAY AWAY FROM ST. PETERS COURT my friend has been conned by them,
the rooms are small and the ensuite is not value for money.
Raleigh Park is good for student life its self catered and near the Jubilee Campus where you can get Uni bus for free.
Great student area

As a current undergrad living at SPC I'd like to add that whilst some people have had bad experiences, this is true for any hall in any university. I've had the best time of my life at SPC and at the winter ball awards ceremony, it won the award for most improved hall. My room is spacious (new block is smaller, granted, but still fairly standard), I love having an ensuite, and because I enjoy cooking I prefer not being catered. People seem to think SPC is way far out from campus, but because we get a free bus directly outside that takes ten minutes to campus (and also goes into town for free, a big bonus) I actually get to my lectures faster than my friends in broadgate park, who walk approx fifteen minutes door to door. Takes me twenty five minutes to walk it, and ten/fifteen on my bike. I've never found that it isn't social- I've made amazing friends and we have loads of socials/events. It may have had a bad rep for socialising a few years ago but that's definitely changed- if you're looking for ensuite, self-catered accomodation, SPC and Raleigh Park (literally a sixty second walk from each other) are both recommended. Raleigh Park recently won 'Mr and Miss Nottingham', showing that off-campus halls are definitely getting bigger, plus SPC and Raleigh have the distinct advantage of being walking distance to town, which campus isn't. Also if anybody has any questions about SPC, off campus life, English lit/lang or Notts in general feel free to message me and I'll try and get back to you ASAP!

Hi you guys!

Just to add to what others said, some catered halls have shared rooms. But it's definitely not necessary to share a room to make friends. Living in halls gives you the opportunity to meet a lot of people! I'm an International student and I was apprehensive of what it would be like but it's been fantabulous so far!

I have an en-suite at Broadgate Park and I've had no problems whatsoever. The staff is really friendly and helpful and the social events organized by Broadgate are really really amazing. Although, I am planning to move out next semester because one of my very good friends got a job in Nottingham and I'd like to share a house with her.

So if anybody is interested in an en-suite room at Broadgate, starting from January.. please leave me a message on this thread or a private message here on TSR and I will get back to you.

It's a really nice and clean flat, huge kitchen and my flatmates are super nice too!

Cheers!

Oh wow thanks everyone!!! I've been so busy preparing for the transition that I totally forgot to check this. Unfortunately (to some), I did choose St Peters Court. As an exchange student they only allowed me a couple options for housing. I wanted Broadgate Park but I also wanted my own bathroom (i'm somewhat of a germ freak haha) and St Peters Court is the only one available to me with my own bathroom. I can also stay a month longer with SPC . I hope it all works out and I'll have fun

And yes, Kiwi07 - I will be taking the shuttle the 29  My flight comes in at 925 so i'll be boarding around then  I hope to see you!!
