Medlink December 2011

Anybody doing Medlink course at Nottingham University this December?? What do you think it'll be like? Those that have done it in the past, have you benefited from it? And are the Oxbridge and Edge seminars etc worth adding on ?

Please don't do that, it's a really big waste of your / your parents' hard-earned money!

You're all so negitive LOL JK

Its more than just a waste of money, it doesn't even help with anything.
hmmmmm, there does seem to be this tsr orthodox view that medlink is the worst possible way to spend a few days in December. Which is strange, i mean what would explain it's continued popularity? are medic hopefuls just really susceptible to anything offering to help them into med school ?

The thing that interests me is why people on TSR seem to hate Medlink with a burning passion. The people I've met IRL that have done it before all say that it was great fun and they learnt a lot from the experience. It does cost a lot of money I will admit. But besides the money, lets say if the course was offered to be paid for by school, what is wrong with doing it?

well it's taking away time when you could be studying for exams and I think people keep going because people trust what their school tells them and medlink is one of those things which is endorsed by many schools.

It's a big waste of money in my opinion. All the info they provide and tell you can easily be found online. It's ok for socialising - but that's all really.
I was lucky enough to get over half my money back through college travel expenses.
I went on the 1 day one last year, it was a good bit of fun, but you learn nothing...everything you need and more is on the TSR wiki.

I've yet to hear of someone that actually learnt somehting at Medlink, but apparently it's fun and it's just one big, 4-day, £350 party

And in your answer to the question about why everyone on TSR "hates" MedLink, I'm assuming it's because it's basically a scam, taking money from potential medics, who the organisors know are worried about getting in.

Maybe the people IRL have not read the TSR wiki. Medlink is free information sold to you for a **** load of money. The interview prep. was a joke, it was "talk to the person next to you about why you want to do medicine". If you want to pay for that then go ahead.
Also the majority of people that I met there said there school had paid for it for them, some never even wanted to do medicine and just went to socialise...

My friends went (after me begging them not to paid for that rubbish), and told me that they could have found all of the information online, in a lot more detail, for free!

Now you tell me why I, or anyone as a matter of fact, should pay some £300 to get drunk.

Medlink is still popular because lots of people think that it'll increase their chances of getting into medical school, when the truth of the matter is that doing more work experience/volunteer work/extracurricular activities will benefit your application a lot more. Not everyone can afford to spend £300 or whatever on a course, so no medical school that I've come across will give anyone an advantage simply for attending it. The information they give you can be found out about online anyway for free, or by simply emailing universities, going on open days and looking through prospectuses. The Student Room is as helpful as any Medsim/Medsix/Medlink course will be. Using the time to catch up with work and to make sure you ace your January exams would be more useful as well.
It's a waste of money and will probably end in a 16 year old chundering all over my room.

Hey guys! I went to Medlink last year, so if you need any help, advice, or have any questions let me know!
I've booked medlink for this december! Unfortunately I only saw all the negative comments AFTER booking it, so I'm just trying to be positive about it and hope it'll at least be fun if not very informative :L But all the people I know in person have said that its really good and you meet so many great people that have the same ambitions as you, so fingers crossed it'll be good

Most people on TSR are looking at everyone going on it as opposed to just a select few. If a couple of students can go on an event/piss-up organised at a crazy cost by their school, that isn't really a problem. If the same event preys on the fears of teenagers whose parents may not be that cash-rich but become convinced that their child needs to go, that is just exploitative. And that is why decent people hate the idea of these courses; their business plan is modelled on anxiety manipulation. It's a downright evil sector to work in.

Too true. It was my birthday-christmas present 2 years ago because I was naive and it looked super important on the website.

What kind of Medlink wisdom is worth knowing?
Reply 19
I went to Medlink 2009. Basically it's like an intro to what medicine is and you get talks from doctors of different specialties telling you what it's like doing their specialty. I think it's meant to help you decide whether or not you really want to do medicine. Most medics should have decided by now so I guess it's kind of a waste of time...

The good stuff was seeing Nottingham Uni (which you can do on an open day), met some friends there, and I bought the book "How to become one of Tomorrow's Doctors" which has helped me quite a bit.

If you've already paid and want to get the most out of it, you should pay most attention to the talks related to Admissions and UKCAT prep. Try and work out the pros and cons of being a doctor, what makes doctors different from other professions in medicine etc through the talks. That should help you later on with your PS and interview - if you don't already know it but tbh it's all pretty straightforward info anyway. The Edge talk was alright, depends on how much you already know. Thought it was useful at the time but found out much of the info later on anyway.

Hope this helps  have fun xx
