If you couldnt become a doctor anymore - what would you do?
Its becoming less and less of a possibility for me by the minute and im not sure what to do with my life anymore. Ive spent nearly 8 years of my life aspiring for this and im completely at a loose end now.

Do you want to leave medicine altogether or have a career with a medical slant? Have you seen this website?

Your uni's career service can also offer advice up to 3 years post graduation.

I honestly don't know what I'd do. I'm guessing all other healthcare is also out of the question?

I think I might do law, though I'm far too nice and soft for cut-throat City stuff. Or I'd really like to be a detective, but I'd be an awful police officer.
Investment banking probably. Think my family would be heartbroken though.

Go for Computer Science
Something involving German

Interpretation, may be?
Probably would be an architect. Grand designs ftw

All the best to you fairy spangles, really hope everything gets sorted for you soon, sounds like you're having a real tough time.
Physicist I think
I'd probably try and do something vaguely related to make the slog of medical school seem worth while, like public health or medical law. Or do a PhD. I know the funding/job prospects for that aren't great at the moment but I would love to do it.

Best of luck fairyspangles, I am sorry to hear that you are having a hard time again and I really hope everything gets sorted out.

Apologies if I've missed the reason why being a doctor is less of an option. If it's because of health reasons, there are medic related options like public health, coroner or something lab based.

If it's because of a loss of love for medicine, a medical degree is a evidence of a lot of transferable skills e.g. academic ability, hard work etc which is very relevent to a wide variety of careers.

OP i'm realy sorry to hear that :frown: are you sure that medicine is definitely not an option?

well if i couldn't do medicine then i'd try and follow one of my other passions instead.....maybe do investment banking, earn lots of money and leave - then volunteer in a foreign country and become a dog kennel owner?
If I wanted to use my medical degree in another way, I'd consider medical journalism (there's a talk at the RSM on the 30th Nov about it if that interests you at all?) or try to use my intercalated degree to get into medical engineering.
I think I'd probably try my best at clinical psychology although that's scarily competitive as well.
Thanks for all the responses really give me something to think about!
Medical journalism - now theres something ive never even thought about. I might look into that.
I'd really really like to continue with medicine - but i fear it may well kill me. Dramatic but kinda realistic and true.
Have you thought about teaching? I can imagine it would be very rewarding if medicine didn't work out for me. Sorry to hear that you're having a hard time, hope things get better. :hugs:

Hope things start looking up for you, fairy spangles :frown:

You could go into medical law if you didn't mind going through long training again. There's also the academic side of medicine, lecturing or researching. Medical journalism seems like a very good choice.

I guess if I wasn't going to do medicine I'd probably be doing something totally unrelated... something in music maybe.

If I ditched the medicine I decided joking around with a few folks to start up a business getting people into medical school and making money from courses etc.
